Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free,
I’m following paths God made for me
I took his hand, I heard him call
Then turned, and bid farewell to all
I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to sing, to play
Tasks left undone must stay that way
I found my peace … at close of play
And if my parting left a void
Then fill it with remembered joy
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened… deep with sorrow
I wish you sunshine of tomorrow
My life’s been full I’ve savoured much
Good friends, good times
A loved one’s touch
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and peace to thee
God wanted me now
He set me free.

Helen was barely a year older than I, and we wound up in the same grade at school once we moved back to Canada from Buffalo, New York. I'd like to say that we were always close, but being from a large enough family that sibling rivalry and politics was commonplace, that didn't happen until we headed into the latter part(s) of our schooling.
After highschool I went south and Helen went north, to Georgian College and eventually, becoming engaged. I was asked to be the best man, having by then moved out to Calgary-meeting her fiancé after he too had come out.
Calgary became her home for many years, and they soon had become parents to two wonderful children, Georgina and Robert-both of whom were adored by Helen. It's as though she had finally found what she had lacked in order to find completion in her life. Later, her love for her grandchildren brought her back to Calgary from Niagara, where she had moved when she and her husband divorced.
Helen had always been a gentle spirit, very much like our mother, who held a solitude within her-not always by choice-with much grace and dignity. Everyone who chanced to meet her was charmed by her warmth and her humour, becoming friends of hers so readily, captivated by her persona and her stories.
Helen, I miss you, and I love you.
your brother Michael.

Paule
