Obituary of Shirley Isabell FRAZER
Shirley Frazer passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 in Calgary Alberta.
Shirley was born March 18, 1932 in Welwyn Saskatchewan to Robert and Mary Welcher (nee Byers). She was the third of four children.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Alexander (Alex) Frazer; parents, Mary and Robert Welcher; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Murray Riddell; brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Marilyn Welcher; and sister in law Ruth Welcher. She is survived by her brother, Bill Welcher; sons Randy Frazer and John Frazer (Kathryn Valentine) and granddaughters Amanda (Franco) Mosca, Elizabeth Frazer (Vonny Fast) and Emily Frazer. She took great pride and satisfaction from all her grand-daughters adventures and successes.
Shirley married Alexander (Alex) Frazer in Welwyn in 1952 and then moved to Calgary, Alberta. Shirley and Alex bought their first (and only) house in West Hillhurst in 1954. Shirley was very happy, and determined, to remain in this home until her passing. Her home, yard, flowers, garden and berries were great sources of activity, curiosity, satisfaction and pride.
From the beginning Shirley got involved with the West Hillhurst Community Association and Hillhurst United Church. These associations, along with her family and friends, were her passion and priority right to the end.
Her relationship with the community started with attending and supporting her sons’ sports and tirelessly volunteering at Bingo and various volunteer positions. In 1975 Shirley was involved in the startup of the West Hillhurst Go Getters Association and participated in running the meetings and programs from the old community hall. With the arena expansion, a space was created in the new hall and the Go Getters Association has been running strong in this room ever since. She continued to enjoy the people, programs and activities offered by the association and took a lot of pride in its success.
Welwyn remained very close to her heart and she remained current on news of Welwyn and its residents by way of weekly letters exchanged with her mother, a plus 60 year subscription to the World Spectator newspaper and many trips home while her mother was alive. She supported the Trinity United Church and Welwyn Cemetery by knitting and baking for fundraising events over the years and ongoing donations. She was always so impressed and surprised how the small community of Welwyn could come together and provide a meal whatever the occasion. It is her wish to have her and Alex’s ashes buried at the Welwyn Cemetery.
Shirley loved following and being a supporter of her favorite sports and teams. Watching her sons play she rarely missed a game. She closely followed local professional teams, the Calgary Flames and Stampeders. She has been a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays fan since the beginning. There was rarely an important curling competition that she was not following closely. She would often beg off or reschedule activities when one of her favorite sports was on TV and she took much pride in letting everyone know how she thought they were doing.
As per Shirley’s wishes, there will not be a memorial service.
