Obituary of Helen Marguerite BAKER

Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With great sadness her family announces the passing of Helen Marguerite (Len) Baker at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, on February 3, 2015. Len was born in Winnipeg in 1927 and was raised there, attending Sir Isaac Newton High School. She later met and then married Don Baker in 1950. Don and Len, and their children Evan and Rhea, lived across western Canada, in Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Grande Prairie, following Don’s work with United Grain Growers, and finally settled in Calgary. Len was an elementary school teacher, having gone through Manitoba Normal School and then teaching in Manitoba. After raising her children she returned to teaching in Grande Prairie and then taught grade four for many years in Calgary at her beloved Colonel Sanders, Brentwood, and finally Captain John Palliser schools. After retiring she spent many proud and happy days as a White Hatter, greeting and helping travelers and dignitaries at the Calgary airport. She also enjoyed social outings with her lady friends for exercise at the pool, and loved to play the ukulele and sing in her group. Len loved to travel; she and Don visited many places and later she often travelled with her sister Anne and nephew Lawrence. She visited many places across Canada, Europe, Australia, the southern US and Hawaii, and enjoyed cruises in the Caribbean and other locations. Len was predeceased by her husband Don in 1995, an infant son, her parents Anastasia and Stephen, and her siblings Anne, Alex and Jack. She is survived by daughter Rhea, son Evan (Penny), four granddaughters (Kelly, Alana, Sarah and Angela), and her great grandson Austin. If friends so desire memorial tributes in Len’s name can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, 6007 – 1A Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 0G5 Telephone: (403) 255-6108, www.kidney.ca.
