Obituary of Pritam Singh KULAR

Brigadier Pritam Singh Kular (Retired) was born March 9th, 1921 at Rajowal, Hoshiarpur in Punjab, India to Sardar and Sardarni Balwant Singh and Bibi Dhan Kaur. His ancestral village is Sansarpur in the Jullundur district of Punjab. Sansarpur is renowned for producing the best Field Hockey players in India since 1920 and prides itself for over 20 Olympic Gold Medals received by its athletes.
His elementary education was at Victor School at Jullundur Cant and later at Colonel Brown School in Dehradun, India. After completing Senior Cambridge at Col Brown School in 1939, he applied for entrance to the British Indian Military Academy at Dheradun. He achieved his commission as a Second Lieutenant in late 1942 and was attached to the 14th Punjab Battalion. After participating in the WW2, Burma Campaign for over a year the regiment was pulled back to help train fresh troops in the art of jungle war fare. Post war the regiment was moved to Shahgei fort in NW frontier of India on the border of Afghanistan. Pritam participated in the 1962 China war briefly and as a Brigade Commander in the 1965 war with Pakistan. After retirement he came to Canada in 1980 with his wife to join their son Gobi Singh in Calgary. He served with the Corps Of Commissioners for over a decade and retired the second time in 1994 at the age of 73. During his tenure with the Corps he was awarded a medal for preventing theft of confidential documents.
He passed away peacefully at the Hospice located within Peter Lougheed Hospital, after enjoying great health through his life, other than the last 2 weeks. He is survived by 3 children, 1 son in law, a daughter in law, 7 grandchildren and 1 sister and a sister in law.
