Obituary of Sandy Earl LOUTITT

Please share a memory of Sandy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with sadness we announce the passing of Sandy Earle Loutitt on Sunday, March 22, 2015. Sandy was born “in the old log house” in Fort Smith, NWT on December 3, 1934. He was the fifth child of Laura Loutitt (nee McLeod) and Colin Loutitt. Sandy attended school in Fort Resolution and Fort Smith. At the age of fourteen, he landed his first “serious” job at the Fort Smith airport. In 1951, at the age of seventeen, he moved to Uranium City, SK. There he got his start in the mining industry and, over time, became one of the major mining-support contractors in the area. During the winter down-times, he signed up for various geology courses offered by resident geologist including Dr. Les Beck, thereby sparking a life-long interest in prospecting and mineral exploration. Over the next thirty years, Sandy owned and operated, in succession, a taxi company, a Shell Oil bulk plant, and a tug & barge operation on Lake Athabaska. In 1980, he moved to Terrace, BC with his wife, Heather. There, Sandy began a new (and successful) career as a market investor, specializing in precious metals and energy firms. In 1990, he and Heather undertook a four-month sabbatical to the Czech Republic, where Heather taught school and Sandy informally taught conversational English (along with free lessons in market capitalism) to the previously communist-governed Czech students. In 2006 they moved to Calgary, where Sandy continued with his various interests and very much enjoyed his time with his grandchildren. In later years, they travelled extensively with trips to the Orkney Islands, the Isle of Lewis, Croatia, New Zealand, Antarctica, England (on board the QE2), the Falkland Islands, Scotland, Italy and Argentina. He is survived by his wife, Heather; sons Paul (Nicole) and Sandy Jr.; grandchildren Brandon, Jason, Alexandria and Cass; brothers Roy (Sylvia), Jack (Irene), and Alan (Nancy) and brother-in-law Harry Bartlett.
