Obituary of Hannelore PRICE

Please share a memory of Hannelore to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that the family of Hannelore (Hanna) Price announce her unexpected passing, in the early hours of Sept. 26, 2015. Hanna was an independent and high spirited woman, born in Berlin Germany, just prior to WWII. She rarely mentioned her childhood, but her inner strength and determination were borne of the many hardships of growing up as a young girl, in Nazi Germany. She met and married the love of her life, Garnet Herbert Price, while he was serving with the PPCLI, and stationed in Germany, during the Korean war. They moved to Calgary, AB in 1955; an adventure started with Hanna learning English by reading comic books. Two years later, they started their family, beginning in 1957 with Debbie Pratt (of New Brunswick); then in 1958, Betty Price (of New Brunswick); Sharon Price (1959); Garnet Price (1960 - of High River, AB); and in 1962, Brenda Price (of Calgary, AB). Hanna was dealt a painful hand with the SIDS death of her baby daughter Sharon (at 3 months old) and a still born baby boy. In 1972, the Price clan moved to New Brunswick, to be closer to her husband's family. Hanna's 15 years there were her very best. She enthusiastically embraced the country and outdoor lifestyle, whether it was growing and preserving fruits and vegetables; baking chocolate chip cookies; running her own greenhouse; planting, tending and harvesting a 1 acre vegetable garden; harvesting potatoes on a mechanical harvester; snowmobiling and enjoying outdoor cookouts in the winter; camping and fishing. Hanna "wasn't scared to try anything!" Along the way, she became a Canadian Citizen and in 1997, won an award for her fundraising efforts for the Canadian Cancer Society. In 1982, Hanna faced one of her greatest challenges, when her husband was diagnosed with a rare lung cancer. With help, she nursed him at their home, until just before his passing, in 1997. Shortly thereafter, Hanna moved back to Calgary, to be closer to her children. There she eventually found her niche, raising thousands of dollars for the “Hilltoppers,” a seniors’ social and travel group at the Westbourne Place seniors’ apartments (where she lived); through the operation of their second hand store. Hanna gave to that store with her whole heart and never received a penny, for her efforts. She was very proud of her work and it shattered her heart when people and circumstances beyond her control put an end to her involvement there. Her store was her baby and she stubbornly defended her prices (even to family!), saying the proceeds were going to a very good cause! Even her extended family in Germany supported her fundraising for her fellow seniors; sending monthly packages of European goods, for sale in her store. Besides her children, Hanna is survived by her son-in-law Jimmy Pratt, of New Brunswick; her son Garnet’s long time and dearest friend, Roberta King, of High River, AB; Brenda's life partner Dwane Cumberland of Calgary, AB; Hanna's sister Lilo Heinemeyer and husband Klaus, their son Uwe Ecke and his wife Daphne, all of Germany; numerous other relatives in Germany and New Brunswick; 4 grand children and 4 great grand children. Hanna's family would like to extend their thanks to the Residents of Westbourne Place who kindly offered their condolences and especially to Ida, who so bravely and lovingly assisted Hanna in her final hours. In addition, we would like to thank all of Hanna's in-home care aides, for their loving assistance that made Hanna feel valued and safe. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hanna's name are greatly appreciated and may be made to the Women In Need Society of Calgary, http://www.womeninneed.net or call 403.252.3826 for more information.
