I was shocked to hear of Richard's passing. I was a court clerk in Edmonton traffic court in the 90's while Richard worked there. I enjoyed sitting with him as my crown. I always got a kick out of his love of Martha Stewart. Not sure if he still admired her after she broke the law but he was fond of her then. I also recall for one of my birthdays Richard gave me a packet of flower seeds and beautifully written note. He was a true gentleman.

I simply wanted to pass along my condolences, at the passing of Richard. I was a recruit when he was there as an Instructor and, despite the regimented approach to training, found him to be a compassionate, professional, empathetic person, unlike some of his colleagues. Please accept my sincere condolences at his passing. The family can take comfort in the knowledge he was a wonderful human being. Best wishes... Howie

I had been away for several days without access to a Calgary newspaper and on my return was saddened to see Richard's (or Rick as I knew him) obituary.
I knew Rick in Queen Elizabeth High School where he directed several of the plays from my drama class. He was funny, knowledgeable and a treat to work with!
After graduation, we all went our separate ways. I had heard from some of our alumni that he'd joined the RCMP, and the general consensus was that he'd do well. He did! I can imagine that wherever he went, that rare sense of humour would stand him in good stead. What a fascinating career he had; something to be proud of. We're that much richer for having known him.
Sincerely,
Wendie (Elviss) Krysak

Rick had style. My only connection with him was a course in the early 70's we attended while in the RCMP and I enjoyed his company. My sincere condolences.

Richard and I trained together in Ottawa (N Division) Troop # 3 (' 65/66). We were one of the last troops to take Equitation and everyone enjoyed the bond created during training. Congratulations on your very successful career as a Law Instructor in Depot (Regina) and overseas after the Force.
Rest In Peace

Rick and I were in the same troop during RCMP training in Ottawa from Nov 1965 to June 1966. We were a tight group, competing with each other to be the best in all we did, all the time. Each of us could do some one thing better than anyone else. Rick excelled in criminal law, but I don't recall that he received the top mark on the final exam. That astonishes me, considering his many accomplishments since then. I find that my fondest memory of Rick is how much he loved his Jag. The car wasn't in great shape, but Rick talked about it constantly. I drove a 12 year old Chevy, and Rick was always willing to explain the fine points of owning his Jag, but he never demeaned me or my Chevy. The only time I saw Rick after training was about 30 years ago. He was just as happy to see me as I was to see him. The 2 hours we spent reminiscing then mean more to me now than the 7 1/2 months with him in training, which was mainly what we talked about. There was an unspoken bond between us and I was really looking forward to seeing him again.

Rick was really one of the good guys in Depot. I went through there Dec. 75/June 76 as part of Troop 22. He was a great instructor and a very patient man. One evening he was running the Guard Commander's Office as Duty NCO and one or two of our guys got a Depot Cruiser stuck in the gumbo near the old range while chasing Jack Rabbits. A prelude to chasing bad guys I guess. Cpl. Parkin heard about the incident and proceeded to the scene of the wayward P.C. A little while later he returned to the Guard Commander's Office and his high browns were covered in mud. Instead of berating the guys he helped them get the P.C. out of the mud. A stickler for detail would have reported the matter to the Sergeant Major. At the time it was S/M Pomfret and he didn't have much of a sense of humor. At our graduation he congratulated us individually as shiny new constables. A good instructor, but in my opinion, a good man. R.I.P. Sgt. Parkin

As a retired 32 year veteran of the RCMP I am glad Rick was there to inspire and guide me as a young 19 year old recruit in 3 Troop 1975. His passion for the law was clearly demonstrated even back then. He was a great mentor and role model. He made the law, "exciting!" Ironic how our respective careers paralelled one another. I too felt the calling to volunteer for a UN mission to Namibia in 1989/190 and while posted to CPIC Field Operations BC/Yukon (Vancouver) I too did some "extra" acting in such series as, X-Files, Millenium and The Sentinnel until I found my other passion, "flying". I have been a Flight Instructor since 2002. I still keep in touch with many of my troop mates and we always smile when talking about Rick. I feel very fortunate to have known Rick and to have been coached by him. He will be missed dearly!

So sad to hear of Rick's recent passing. He was a good friend and even though we have not been really close for a very long time, after I moved to Arizona, we still remained in touch by telephone. We usually had some rousing conversations, as you might expect from Rick. I am very sorry for your loss and wish you all, all the best in your lives. Rick was a very fun friend and we had a rousing youth together, as you may remember!
Sincerely Bill Holmes

I loved working with Richard at the Crown Prosecutors' office in Calgary.
He was fun, funny, friendly, caring and really had every positive attribute a person could have. He was simply an amazing man. The world has lost one of the best, but heaven has gained him. I hope we meet again in the terrifies one day - I am sure we will. Kindest regards to his family. Fondly, Lin Snowden.
