Obituary of Ineke Hermina SMIT

Ineke Smit, beloved mother of Melissa and Carly, passed away on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 and is now reunited with her best friend and soulmate Jack. Ineke was a guiding example of strength and courage as she battled ALS, showing those around her that one can maintain a sense of humour even in the darkest times. After the unexpected passing of her husband in 2002 Ineke continued to embrace life by travelling the world, taking up golf and laughing with friends over a glass of wine. Ultimately, her greatest loves were her four adoring grandchildren who could always be found on her lap getting an ever important Gramma cuddle. ALS is not something that one can battle alone and her family is ever so grateful for Ineke’s amazing friends who always made time for visits and maybe a little gossip. Ineke is survived by her daughters Melissa (Amy) and Carly (Anish); grandchildren Jackson, Nixon, Eli and Nyla; brother Henk (Toos) and sister Ria who reside in Holland. Ineke is predeceased by her husband Jack Smit. A special thank you to Jane, Megan, Leslie, Ray and the many more spectacular people who are part of the ALS Society of Alberta. Most importantly, a huge thank you to Tina, her caregiver of almost 3 years who shared in the highs and the lows, working tirelessly to maintain Ineke’s quality of life. A celebration of Ineke’s extraordinary life will be held at the Country Hills Golf Club, 1334 Country Hill Blvd N.W., on Monday, February 29 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the A.L.S.
