Obituary
Obituary of Bernhard Mackay WYLIE
Please share a memory of Bernhard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bernie Wylie, age 84, of Calgary Alberta. Bernie passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 12, 2016 surrounded by family and close friends. After an extraordinarily courageous battle he finally succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the Sarcee hospice in Calgary.
Bernie was born on July 30, 1931 at the Calgary General Hospital to parents Arthur and Edna (Holm) Wylie. Almost his entire life was spent in Calgary. He was married to the love of his life, Grace Charleen (Chuckie) Benjamin on November 24, 1951 at the Crescent Heights United Church in Calgary.
The newlyweds moved to Berkeley California when Bernie was awarded a full scholarship in hockey at the University of California and where he completed his Bachelor of Arts in Education while Chuckie looked after the first two of their four children.
Upon their return to Calgary, Bernie never had the opportunity to teach as that would have required him to take another year of schooling. Instead, with two kids and another on the way, he embarked on his long and distinguished oil industry career starting with an exciting stint as a landman scout for Imperial Oil. He went on to join Atlantic Richfield as a landman, and in 1978 he joined Paramount Resources as Vice-President Land where he was an officer and director until May, 2015.
Bernie loved his golf. He maintained a single digit handicap most of his life, and regularly shot his age as a member of both the Silver Springs and Calgary Golf and Country Clubs. Bernie and Chuckie, along with Earl and Marg Scott, also won the 1976 Alberta Mixed Curling Championships.
Bernie will be remembered as a humble gentleman who lived by the Golden Rule. He was a romantic and honorable partner, a prolific reader, a gifted athlete, a tenacious competitor, steadfast trustworthy worker, and a father, grandfather, great-grandfather who helped raise his ever growing family with undying commitment, grace, and love.
Bernie is survived by four children - Shane (Robyn), Troy, Tanis (Gary), and Mark (Maureen); eight grandchildren- Ben, Ali, Chelcee, Dallas, Zachary, Taylor, Christopher, and Stephen; thirteen great grandchildren; brothers Bob (Joan), Harvey and Bill (Jean); the Sherrington family; and special friends Eve and Shannon. He is predeceased by his wife Grace Charleen (Chuckie) Wylie, his beloved partner Eva Sherrington, his brother Cliff and his sister Tory.
Bernie’s expressed wish was that there is to be no memorial service whatsoever.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Sarcee hospice in Calgary. The family would like to thank the compassionate and caring staff at the hospice for their wonderful care in our father’s final days.
