Obituary of Cyril Percy HAINES

Cy passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 11, 2016 at Newport Harbour Care Centre in Calgary at the age of 98. Cy was predeceased by his wife Lillian (Billy) and later, his special friend, Eleanor O'Rourke. He will be lovingly remembered by his stepson Bob Dixon and daughter-in-law Patricia, niece Eleanor Willson (Calgary) and her children Skip and Sharyn and nephew Brian and Patricia Taylor and their children (Oshawa, Ont.). Cy will also be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in Ontario. He was an amazing "Gramps" to grandchildren Herb, Ripple (Don), Holly (Ken), Barb (Shawn), Hugh (Doris) Dixon, and Terry Tout (Debbie). Cy is survived by 11 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Cy was born in Toronto and joined the RCAF Reserve in 1941. He was stationed in Shepard, Alberta where he supervised the packing of parachutes until his honorable discharge in 1946. Later, Cy was the laundry supervisor at the Colonel Belcher Hospital and District 7 Nursing Homes. He enjoyed many years playing Santa for staff and residents during his tenure. Cy was the life of the party and enjoyed regular visits to the casino and socializing. He was warmly remembered by many neighbours on 17 Ave NW, where he resided independently until 2014. Special thanks to Cy's nurse, companion, and friend, Kim Bracken, and to the staff and residents of Newport Harbour Care Centre. A memorial gathering will be held at the Kensington Legion, 1910 Kensington Rd NW, on Friday, June 17, 2016 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.ca). Urn interment will follow at a later date at Queen's Park Cemetery.
