Obituary of Philip Keith CARRY
Please share a memory of Philip to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Born on the farm near Acadia Valley, December 29, 1924, Phil Carry died in Calgary, June 27, 2016, half way through what he would say was his 92nd year.
Phil leaves behind his wife, Lee, and his children Sharon, Timothy (Kathy), Joel, Michael (Lisa Steinbrecher), and Mark. He will be greatly missed by his granddaughter Stephanie Talbot (Stephen Hurley) and great-granddaughter Shyla Hurley. He was a second father to his step-children Gail, Carol, Bob, Ken and Ernie.
He was predeceased by his son Nelson, his parents Joseph and Mabel, and his siblings, Jean Hahn, Jack, Murray, Rod, Wendell and Rita Cobb. His sister-in-laws, Nat, Terry, and Wilma Carry, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews survive him.
After graduating from Camrose College, Phil enrolled at 17 in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was honourably discharged four years later after serving as an instructor and airman in Canada, Newfoundland, and England. After WWII he gave up entrance to UBC, to join the management development program of the Hudson's Bay Co. Then the youngest manager ever hired by the Bay's Governor, Phil enjoyed a stellar 20-year career in fashion retail, including owning stores in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge and managing Holt Renfrew's two Calgary operations. While in Medicine Hat, he served a term as Alderman, joined the Kinsmen as their Expansion Chairman, and was elected President of the Young Liberal Association. In 1962, he made the decision to expand his talents into the creative and manufacturing dimension of fashion in Toronto, and later Montreal. This gave him the opportunity to circle the globe 101 times as the successful owner of Superb Sportswear (label Pant-Man) and Phil Carry Sportswear (plus labels Evan Picone, Highland Queen) until 1989. Before retiring and returning to Alberta, Phil served on the fashion industry's advisory committee for 20 years and to the end cherished the many friends he made in his career.
Phil will rest in peace in the family plot in the Carstairs' cemetery.
