HAIGH – Shirley Mary
March 19, 1932 – Epsom, England
July 2, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta
Shirley Haigh, beloved widow, mother and grandmother, died peacefully on July 2 at Agape Hospice, after succumbing to cancer at the age of 84. She is survived by her children Susan (Colin), Stephen (Nathalie), Richard (Charlotte), Michael (Dana) and Philip (Kathleen) and her grandchildren Zoe, Aidan, Emmanuelle, Connel, Kiera, Liam, and Kate. She will also be remembered by her relatives and friends in Canada, the U.S., U.K. and Australia. Shirley and her dear husband, Geoff, who died in 2002, came to Canada from England with her three children, Susan, Stephen, and Richard in 1963 and, with the addition of Canadian-born Michael and Philip, lived in Calgary from 1969. She had a warm and loving nature and quiet dignity that affected all those who came into contact with her. She devoted her life to raising her children: an incredibly caring mother who will be missed by her 5 children every day. She loved simple things in life, hated pretension, was passionate about classical music, birds and nature. She read widely, and her intelligence shone out. After Geoff died things changed dramatically, as she had to learn how to organize and run her life – which she did with the same understated ability that was her trademark. The family would like to extend all their thanks to the staff and volunteers at Agapé Hospice, to her doctors – Elijah Dixon, Sonja Lee, Albert Woo, Linda Fong and Tania Murynka – who all looked after her with such loving care from the moment she was diagnosed in January 2015. They are all superhuman. A celebration of her life will be held for family and friends sometime in the summer/fall of this year. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Agapé Hospice, 1302 - 8 Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1B8 Telephone: (403) 282-6588 or the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), 506-250 City Centre Avenue, Ottawa, ON, K1R 6K7 Telephone: 1-800-333-9453.
