Ona interviewed & hired me back in 1981. I was fresh out of high school in Ontario and became the Receptionist for the Drilling Dept. We talked about my love of acting & singing and played different instruments - she laughed and said, "I reminded her of Kerry". She became my "Mom" and she made sure all her Shell kids were doing okay - through break-ups to broken bones. She made sure we had a homemade birthday cake at work. I still make her carrot cake today! She couldn't wait for her annual family camping trips & all the crafts her & Pauline were going to do with the kids. When I got married in 1984 and had no family coming, she made sure all the Superintendents' and Managers' came for me! She will be lovingly remembered always!

Ona was the pulse of Holmwood Ave, such a kind neighbour who I had many talks and coffee with. She and I tried to be the best neighbours to old Tom and Jean who lived next door to Ona. Her gardening skills were exceptional, I learned a lot from her. She dearly loved her grandkids, always involved in their next adventures. She loved her cat, used to cuddle with her as she watched her favourite programs.
I am blessed to have known her, and so glad she is now at peace.
Holmwood Ave isn't the same without you Ona!

My sincere condolences to all of Ona’s family – I was so sorry to read of her passing. I first met Ona shortly after they arrived in Calgary from Australia – Pauline talked her into coming to work at Shell as we were short-handed. She started working in a temporary position and basically never left until she retired many years later. I worked with her for many of those years and we became great friends. She was a most interesting, caring person (nothing was ever too much trouble) with a wonderful sense of humor. She had many stories to tell of her family’s travels in the different countries where they’d lived – knowing Ona, her stories didn’t lose anything in the telling!! Once the Flames arrived in Calgary, she became my “hockey buddy” and we went to as many games as possible over the next years – we even managed trips to Edmonton and Vancouver to watch them play. I miss our visits but she has left us all with some wonderful memories.
