Obituary of Catherine Elizabeth BUCKNER

Betty Buckner of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the age of 91 years.

Betty was born in Calgary on November 24, 1925, where she resided for most of her life. Betty met her husband Ken while he was training in Canada with the RAF. She followed him back to England where they married and lived for a few years, returning to Calgary in 1946.

Betty was active in the Girl Guides of Canada, receiving recognition for 45 years of service.  She enjoyed being a leader and role model to many young women. Betty held numerous positions on committees within the Girl Guides of Canada, and was always very proud to be part of the organization.  In addition to the long service awards she was also given a Letter of Commendation, the Certificate of Merit and Medal of Merit.  She was a founding member of the WestRockers Trefoil Guild and spoke of its members with fondness.

Betty started quilting when her children were grown and joined the Bow River Quilters.  Over the years she ensured that each member of the family received a beautiful quilt, wall hangings and Christmas tree skirts, providing many lasting memories.

She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her sons and daughters-in-law Rick and Brenda, Jim and Jean; daughter and son-in-law Iris and Fred; grandson Marc; granddaughters Jillian and Jessica; as well as great-grandsons Kobe and Nicholas.

She was predeceased by her husband Ken in 2010; brothers Walliss and Jim; sisters Marie and Caroline.

Betty will be forever remembered as a kind, caring and generous person by all who knew her.

In recent months, as Betty’s health started to decline she was fortunate to have many wonderful caregivers.  The family would like to thank Dr. Melnik and the staff at the Manor of Rocky Ridge, Dr. Yolanda Kao and the staff at Foothills Medical Centre, Unit 62, as well as the staff at the Calgary Bethany Care Centre.

Funeral Services will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 – 4th Street N.W., (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.
