Obituary of Josef Bernard SCHMIDT

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Josef, beloved husband, father, and Opa who passed away peacefully on Monday, September 4, 2017 at the age of 91 years.

A Calgarian since his emigration from Germany in 1949, Josef worked at Tynan’s Furniture until he opened his own upholstery business in 1975. After retiring, he could be found minding his grandchildren, grand-dogs, and tending to the trees and shrubs in his Kensington yard, with his apple tree being his favorite.

Josef is survived by his loving wife Hertha of 67 years. He is also remembered by his children Siegfried (Lora) and Doris (David) Hawkins; his five grandchildren Paulla (Nick), Michael (Shelley), Heather (Tyler), Bradley, and Emily (Troy); and seven great-grandchildren.

Josef was predeceased by his youngest grandchild Allen Josef in 2012 and his sisters Kathi, Rose, and Mary.

A Celebration of Life will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 – 4th Street N.W., (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.  Private Graveside Service to follow at 3:00 p.m.  Reception to follow at the funeral home.
