Obituary of Elva Gertrude FREEBORN

Elva Gertrude Freeborn (nee Schell) passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Center in Calgary, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Elva’s family would like to express their gratitude to the FMC Unit 62 doctors and nurses (particularly the palliative care team) for the care and respect they gave Elva in her last days.

Elva was born on January 5, 1927 in Sunnidale, Ontario and grew up on her family’s farm in Ontario. Elva met Doug Freeborn in the Toronto area where they were married October 11, 1947. Elva and Doug moved to Edmonton and later Calgary to raise their family of four boys: Randy, Ric, Don and Dave.

Elva spent many years working for the Hudson’s Bay store in downtown Calgary from which she retired at age 55. She and her family enjoyed many summers at their cabin on the Shuswap Lake. In their retirement Elva and Doug travelled and enjoyed year-round golfing and spending winters in locations that didn’t get snow. Elva continued to golf with Doug until she was 90.

Elva was predeceased by her son Ric (Gae) and is survived by her husband Doug; her sons Randy (Susan), Don (Sherry), Dave (Maureen); grandchildren Michael (Dianna), Stephen (Morganne), Kelly (Colin), Tim (Clarabelle), Todd (Miriam), Joshua, Samantha; and eight great-grandchildren.

As Elva requested, there will be no service.
