Obituary
Obituary of Richard CANDY
Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Richard passed away on Friday January 10, 2014 peacefully at South Campus Health surrounded by his loving wife and family at the age of 88.
He was born in Hastings, East Sussex, England on May 7, 1925 to Victor and Elsie Candy. He married Isa Maria Tealdi in Gravesend, Kent on March 16, 1957 and enjoyed 56 wonderful years of marriage.
He attended Lincoln College and graduated in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. While in England he worked for Ewbank and Partners and traveled frequently to the State of Kuwait. He published papers on Water and Power for the State of Kuwait and Crude Oil as a Fuel for large Utility Steam Generators. Richard also worked for Reeds Paper Mill in Maidstone, Kent. During WWII he was an officer in the bomb disposal unit. When the war ended he participated in clearing the beaches in the south of England.
Richard and Isa immigrated with their young family to Montreal in 1967 and worked for Montreal Engineering. He was transferred to India for two years to work on the Nuclear Power Plant in Rajasthan. After returning to Canada he spent further time in Montreal and Toronto and eventually transferred to Calgary in 1976; holding various Management and Project Director positions. In 1980 Richard joined Husky Oil Operations and eventually took early retirement in 1986. In 1987 he was the Learning Manager and lecturer at SAIT for the Power Engineering program.
Richard enjoyed his sailboat and cottage life at Gull Lake immensely; taking pleasure in sailboat sleep-overs with the grandchildren. They have wonderful memories of Grandpas pirate treasure hunts including maps that led to real buried treasure boxes on small islands or the other side of the lake. Both Richard and Isa enjoyed traveling and especially cruising the last few years. Memorable trips included Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Turkey, Greece, Hawaii and many European countries. Even though he suffered a debilitating stroke in 2000 he still managed to go on several cruises. He loved building things and repairing cars. From an early age he took things apart to see how they worked and then put them back together again. One always knew where to go for advice on repairs or construction. He was very proud of his children and took great pleasure watching his grandchildren grow and become accomplished young adults.
Richard is survived by his son Michael (Judy); daughter Christine (Ron); and daughter Linda (Robert), as well as his grandchildren Patrick, Sydney, Nicole, Justin, Dana, Tessa, Zachary and Austen.
There will be no funeral service; cremation to take place. Please forward condolences through www.hffs.com.
