Obituary of Rick Kim FREEMAN

Please share a memory of Rick to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Rickey Kim Freeman was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on January 27, 1959 and passed away at age 59, in Calgary, Alberta on Thursday, November 8, 2018.

Rick excelled in school and graduated from Lord Beaverbrook High School in Calgary at age 17. While in high school, he and his classmates built a 3-bedroom bungalow, which started Rick’s love for woodworking. He later apprenticed at SAIT in carpentry, water treatment management, and environmental sciences and wrote, published and presented patents and documents during his career. Rick was very creative. He loved the look and feel of wood, and in his later years taught himself to carve.

Rick enjoyed the outdoors. He loved camping, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and snowshoeing and went on week-long backpacking trips. He spent time in the mountains whenever possible and traveled to the Queen Charlotte Islands, hiked the West Coast Trail, and backpacked through the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Rick was always concerned about the environment and our role in keeping it clean for future generations. He loved all animals and birds and had a canary, "Pointy”.

Rick had an affinity for M.C. Escher sketches, Haida and Inuit art. He was an avid reader of such authors as Charles Dickens, Flann O’Brien, Isaac Asimov, Stephen Hawking, W.O. Mitchell and Steven Leacock. He was a fan of Beethoven, The Beatles and Peter Gabriel, among others, and had a great sense of humour.

He is survived by his two sisters, Karen and Cheryl; niece Lyndsay (Asim, Maya and Dylan); niece Melissa (John, Cole and Kalem); nephew Adrian and nephew Julian (Katie and Jude). Rick is also survived by cousins in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Rick was predeceased by his father, Alfred Leasle in 1999; his mother, Phyllis Irene, in 2007; and in 2018, his brother Keith.

Rick is loved dearly.
