A close friend of mine from Calgary had recently told me of Gord's passing, and with a heavy heart I write this tribute.
I have nothing but fond memories of Gord. Having arrived in Calgary from Ireland with my wife in 2009, I had managed to secure a post at Gibbs Gage Architects: and that is where I met Gord. Being new to Calgary, Gord was one of those people who made us feel at home right from the start. I can honestly say that Gord was my initial go-to (in a large office) whenever I had a question: and he always had time to answer questions. He was a truly genuine person. We had good times on both a professional and personal level.
Although based in Vancouver, B.C. now, I will hold fond memories of my friend Gord Brown, and as we say in Ireland Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Until we meet again Gord....

Gord was my 'work husband' since he always got in before me and made me coffee. What a genuine, caring person he was. He always made time for me to meet up on his trips to the Okanagan after I moved away and I was always ecstatic to see him! He will be dearly missed. What a great man! Gone too soon.

All four sets of Gordon's great-grandparents came to Alberta between 1894 and about 1905. The Browns and Lawries came from Scotland, and the Michells and Govers came from the suburbs of London. Gordon is well connected into local southern Alberta history. His great Aunt Mary Michell was a nanny to former Lieutenant Governor Franck Lynch-Stauton, and Aunt Mary married to Boer War veteran, Howard Beddall Smith, aka "Posthole Smith" a homesteader, rancher and forest ranger in the porcupine hills. Gordon's great uncle, grandfather and uncle were members of the RNWMP & RCMP. His great-grandfather David Brown, grandfather David Brown, and a number of uncles and great uncles fought in WWI & WWII. Gordon's dad was also David, as was Gordon's middle name. In Calgary, Gordon's great aunt was married to James Shouldice, whom Shouldice Park, Manor, Pool, etc. are named after. The Shouldice mansion became the first Calgary Crematorium. Gordon's dad (or grandpa?) bought four lots along the river, in Montgomery, from Mr. Shouldice, where three generations of the Browns lived for a time, in the "Village" of Montgomery. Gordon's dad built their house in the mid 1950's, with the help of his mother. (I am told that Auntie Joan assisted in all sorts of tasks during the construction.) Grandpa Michell was a mechanic for the CPR. The Michells lived on 16th avenue (across from Schmitty's, on the site of a current Esso Gas station, in Montgomery. As young adults, Gordon's parents met in the village, and enjoyed activities like a Sunday afternoon game of slowpitch. (My dad foud my mother as well in that little "village" and first lived in Parkdate a short walk from the "Browns" near the city limit between Calgary and Montgomery. Bowness was its own town then as well.) Linda and Gordon lived their younger years in Montgomery, until the family moved up to Dalhousie in about 1974. Grandma Brown lived with them as well, into the late 1980's. Gordon's dad was an optician for many years that included a small business located downtown, and then at the Market Mall. His mom a stenographer & secretary for many years. Gordon's sister and her husband have two daughters to whom Gordon was a proud uncle. Grandma Jane Brown was a seamstress who was very talented in fine work, and Grandma Michell "Nana" did a lot of benevolent work in the community. Great grandfather and Grannie Gover were married in Calgary in 1894, and Nana was born in Red Deer in 1896. Nana was the first enrolled student, and first "protestant" enrolled in the St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Convent boarding school in Red Deer. The Michell clan were long time members of St. Stephen's Anglican Church in Calgary, from the early 1920's until the late 1980's. Gordon was a "pioneer" in a very different way than his grandparents. Gordon had failing kidneys when young. I believe he was the first youth, and only the third kidney transplant patient, to have the operation done in Calgary, at the Foothills Hospital, in the mid 1970's. Gordon had at least four transplants, including one donated by each of his mom and dad. He had to experience many years of dialysis. Since his parents passed away in 2005 and 2013, Gordon choose to keep to himself, so most of us cousins have not seen him since 2013. Gordon's mannerisms were very much like his dad's, and as Gordon aged he looked more and more like his dad. Gordon was an accomplished architect and draftsman. His G-G-Grandfather Gover and G-Grandfather Gover were both architects and surveyors with awarded Fellowships, from the mid 1800's to the 1920's. Oddly enough, Great Grandpa and Grannie Gover lived in a sod house east of Red Deer for one year before a wood house could be built. Memories are special, and I have wonderful childhood memories of my time spent with Gordon. We were both a bit goofy, and had no problem making each other laugh. Gordon was one member in the Calgary community, and a part of the local history; and, his life is a story I hope someone will be able to tell others about. I am blessed and thankful to God for having known Gordon my entire life. Gordon is interred with/near his dad, David William Bennett Brown, mom, Joan Mary Brown, nee Michell; and, his grandparents, David Brown and Jane Kay Hastings Brown, nee Lawrie, at the Columbarium of the Calgary Crematorium in Queen's Park Cemetery.
