Obituary of Nils Henningsmoen
Nils, beloved husband of the Late Rita of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at the age of 86 years.
Nils was born in Drumheller, Alberta on November 10, 1932.
He married his one love Rita, whom he met in Morin, Alberta, in 1960. They moved to Calgary in 1962.
Nils' love and commitment for Rita was a hallmark of his character, notably the decade he spent caring for her in her long struggle with diabetes.
He struggled with alcoholism in his early years and was very proud of his 55 years of sobriety. Nils was a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous and helped many others gain their sobriety.
Nils loved music, especially playing his accordion with friends. He continued to entertain the residents at the Bethany Care Centre with his musicality. He also sang in a Norwegian choir for several years.
Nils was fortunate to travel to Europe twice and visited both the United Kingdom and his ancestral homeland of Norway.
Nils loved to yodel and yahoo and was always tickled when he got a response, particularly if the yodel or yahoo was returned.
He will be most remembered for his compassion. He was known for helping others, whether family, friends or in his later years, his fellow residents the Bethany Care Centre.
He is survived by his son Hal Henningsmoen (Maureen Shields); daughter Sherry Moores Lefebvre (Ted Lefebvre).
Nils was predeceased by his wife Rita; sisters Ruth, Margaret and Helen.
A Memorial Service will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 – 4th Street NW, (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on October 8, 2019 at 3p.m. A Reception will follow at the funeral home.
