CARTER, Ernest (Ernie) Wilson C.E.T.
July 15, 1914 Lancaster, England
June 28, 2013 Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ernie- just days short of his 99th Birthday. He passed away peacefully at Carewests Garrison Green facility.
Ernie lived a full life; he was born in Lancaster, England and moved as a young child to Drumheller with his widowed mother, Florence Wilson Carter. Ernie married the love of his life, Beatrice (Burroughs) in 1936. Beatrice passed away in 1979. They were happily married for forty-three years, having lived in the Drumheller area, Turner Valley and Calgary. Ernie worked in the coal mines and on farms in the Drumheller area. In 1938 he was working in the oil patch as a roustabout, his diligence soon resulted in his being promoted to a tank gauger. Ernie then worked for Royalite Oil Company, later to be taken over by Imperial Oil. With Ernies detail to geological maps and cross sections, he decided to take a course in drafting by correspondence and at SAIT and he eventually became the chief draftsman for that company.
In 1959 he made the decision to start his own company Carter Mapping Company, which became well known in the oil industry. His company supplied the petroleum industry with base and oil maps for all of the Western Canada oil industry. In 1972, Ernie sold the enterprise and began a new business, Ernie Carter Developments Ltd., with his wife Beatrice and children Terry, Colleen and Heather. This business focused on commercial/industrial real estate in Western Canada and California U.S.A...
In 1999, Ernie retired from ECD, turning this family business over to his children. Ernie remained on as a mentor until 2010, when he entered Garrison Green.
Ernie was one of the founders and first president of ASET (1963-4) and just received his fifty year pin. He was a proud life member of the Calgary Ranchmens Club where he enjoyed playing bridge and lunching with his friends, and also the Rotary Club of Calgary.
Ernie is survived by his siblings Joan Lawson and Charlie West; his wife of thirty-two years Ila (Reynolds); his children Colleen Carter Reynolds (David) and Heather Carter (John Caron) and daughter-in-law Judy Carter. He is also survived by Ilas children Marsha Reynolds and Kelli Hanslien (Dan); grandchildren, Ryan and Breanne (Anni) Reynolds, Jennifer (Blair) Svoboda, Kathleen Carter, Dan Austin, Holly Austin, Alysha Hanslien and Hayley Hanslien; and greatgrandson Phoenix Barry. He was predeceased by his first wife Beatrice in 1979 and brother Brenton (Bob) West and son Terry Carter in 2007.
Ernie was a man of deep faith. He encouraged and supported his children and grandchildren to attain a higher education.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Lukes Catholic Church (Corner of Northmount Drive & Northland Drive N.W.) on Friday, August 9, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.hffs.com. In lieu of flowers, Ernie would appreciate donations be made to either ASET annual bursary in his name, or to the Carter Memorial Fund/Rotary Club of Calgary. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses and doctor of Garrison Green and Foothills Medical Centre for the outstanding care he has received for the past three years.
