Obituary of Doris Rita Cook

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Doris Cook lived a full life; 100 years, a milestone she and her family felt was simply amazing! In December, Doris’ family was able to celebrate her 100th birthday with her.  She took pleasure in seeing her great grandchildren playing and eating cupcakes.  Doris married Robert (Bob) Cook on August 5, 1949. They had four children.  Doris was a stay at home Mom for many years. She took an administrative position with the Alberta Government, Land Titles Department, in 1969 and she retired in 1984.  Doris lost the love of her life, Bob, in 1978. They enjoyed camping, spending time with family and they dreamed of retiring in Peachland, BC.

Doris remarried in 1988.  She and her second husband, George Wellens, loved to travel.  They carved out a wonderful life together, which included travel throughout Canada, the US and many countries through the world.  They joined a hiking club and they took great pleasure in hiking trails with the friends they made in the group.  A visit to the legion for happy hour was occasionally required!

She enjoyed sewing, knitting and baking.  Doris loved to walk, even in her care centres.  When her family visited, they often had to search for her as she was walking the halls or courtyard of the facility.

Through adversity in her life, Doris remained dedicated to her family. She was devoted to her four children and they remained devoted to her through her life. Forever a “Mom” she always thought of her kids first.

Doris is survived by her children, Lorraine (Jim) Peters, Murray (Barb) Cook, Susan (Mike) Broome and Judy Mickelson all of Calgary; her grandchildren, Matthew (Tenille) Peters, Bradley (Megan) Peters, Danielle Cook (Ty Gauthier), Stephanie (Jarrett) Traptow, Paul (Ashlee) Broome, Kailee (Josh) Arnold, Michelle (Devan) Busslinger, Kelsey (David) Kieboom, Ashley (Travis) Kieboom; plus thirteen great grandchildren.

A private celebration of life was held Friday, September 25, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask others to consider an act of kindness towards someone in need.
