I’m proud to consider myself a friend of Deans. He was passionate about justice and always worked hard and tirelessly as a union leader to improve the lives of the people he represented. I had great respect for him and admiration for his dedication. His sense of humour was one of a kind and he had that wonderful contagious laugh that always made you glad to see him. Dearest Aileen, Lindsay, Courtney, Matthew, and little Maddy, there are no words that can express our sadness at the loss of your loving partner, father and grampa. He truly loved each and everyone of you. Whatever he did in his life he gave it his all to the best of his ability. He was a fighter through and through, just ask Raymond. We are so proud of him for making a loving home for his family. We are so grateful to have had him with us last August for a visit. This is how we will remember him, enjoying life and his sweet little grand daughter with us. How proud he was.
Dearest Deano, we will surely miss your genuine smile, and laughter and the joy you brought to all those who love you. We know you and mom had a special relationship with love and respect for each other. We trust and believe that your spirits are together once again.

On this Father’s Day, I want to honor a man who has been a second Dad to me, Dean McKerness. He passed away suddenly this week and words can’t express how much he meant to everyone who loved him.
He is the father of my best friend, Courtney, and has been family to my family.
Deano embodied mischief, humor, generosity, friendship, loyalty, kindness and love.
He’d give you the shirt off of his back and the last dollar in his wallet if you needed either. He was passionate about justice, and worked tirelessly and selflessly as a union leader to improve the lives of those he served.
He loved to give his kids opportunities and experiences he didn’t have as a kid, and was always joyful and full of conspiratorial giggles when we were about to do something fun.
His laugh. That laugh was contagious and got him out of so much trouble as he teased the heck out of everyone and anyone. Always trying to rile us up, Deano would say the most outlandish things and sucker us kids into the most ridiculous debates, then laugh hysterically that he got us...again!!! He pretty much invented trolling, but in real life! LOL. It was all in fun though, as that’s what he wanted for all of us. To have fun and enjoy ourselves.
And lord help anyone who got between someone he loved and their happiness. Deano would go to the mat to fight for anyone being treated unfairly. He was fearless in that regard and it gave those around him the courage to stand up for themselves and what’s right.
Though he loved a good debate, when it came to family and friends, and the important things, he was always on your side. There to listen, to comfort, to talk it out and just be on your team. Even when there was nothing to do be done, he was there to just be in your corner, give you a big bear hug, and just feel with you.
I have a million memories of Deano, everything from him staying up late to chat with Courtney and I on sleepovers and make us snacks, to him disapproving of the tattoos we got in Vegas. Fishing, sitting around fires, playing cards, hiking, house boating, sitting around kitchen tables solving the problems of the world, it was all fun. It was all love.
Deano, you live on as the legend that you were, larger than life, a wonderful Dad, grandpa, best friend and a caring leader. Your bear hugs, joyful laugh and loving heart will always be with us. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for being you.
To Aileen, Court, Linz, Matt and all of Deano’s family and friends, my heart goes out to all of you. ❤️

We are celebrating Dean, his life, his laughter, his fierce loyalty to his family and his big hearted compassion for those less fortunate than himself. What wonderful qualities are those. And we, as a family have not lost his gifts because he has left them with us. I, personally, have lost a brother who was my No. 1 sparring partner. He kept me on my toes and challenged me to know that of which I spoke. He also welcomed me with open arms during my annual family Calgary visits and couldn't do enough to make me comfortable. I am so very happy to have had some wonderful time with Dean and Aileen, Courtney and Clay, and Maddie last summer. I treasure all the memories of the good times we had over the years. He left us too soon but he made the most of his time. To Aileen and all my family I say, he is not gone...he has simply gone ahead. Dean, till we all meet again.....rock on!
