Delphine Large was an exceptionally fine artist, potter and sculptor. She was a signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) and a President of our Victoria Chapter in the 1980s. She guided the chapter through the early days, and juried many of our exhibitions. Delphine produced innovative, original, powerful watercolour paintings that came from her soul, many of them including collage, as she was very interested in texture. She showed her work in the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Art Rentals and in many exhibitions, including a solo show at Nunavut Gallery. In 2009 she was made an honorary lifetime member of the Victoria Chapter of the FCA. Our chapter owes a lot to the leadership of Delphine Large; we have lost a pioneer and a truly original artistic voice with her passing. And I have lost an artistic mentor and friend.
In her own words, Delphine describes her creative process thus: “I seek to capture the essence, the spirit, by a spontaneous response and intuition…. Some force urges me on to satisfy my own need to express what is in my being…. To paint from one's inner self is very fulfilling and to find another human being to whom my work speaks, while not imperative, affirms my sensibilities.”

Dear Marney
As I left Canada in 1987 and only saw Mom once in 2000, I can say you have opened my eyes to a side of Mom I didn't know, though I watched her 'pot' in the basement in Victoria until it became too difficult for her physically. I was there when the other art came too, but one doesn't appreciate things until someone else comments.
My recollections are more back when I was perhaps 5 and Mom was trying to oil paint in the spare bedroom, but 5 kids proved too much..
Take care
Mark

I was very surprised when I read Delphine's obituary. Her husband, Charlie was my mother's cousin. My mother was Marie Cleverdon (née Watson). I have a picture of Charlie and his brother Garney as toddlers. One of them is sitting in a rocking chair that was made for my grandmother (Annie Watson (née Carrette). I still have the rocking chair.

My husband and I met Delphine in 1999 when we bought her house on 1579 Hampshire rd In Victoria. I wanted to tell you how much we have enjoyed the lovely garden she created , and she even left us with a plot plan she had created!
We did visit her in her new condo and viewed the lovely art she was creating there.
She lived here nearly 20 years about the same length of time we have lived here now.
She was a lovely lady and I know she will be missed.
Sincerely Irene

Although my memories of growing up around the corner from you on McIntyre Street and knowing all of you are growing vague, I do remember you Mother for her friendliness, kindness and elegance. My sincerest condolences to you all. Take care, be well and stay we.

So very sorry to hear of Delphine's passing. She was good friends with my Mom, Dorothy Creasy, (1923 - 2013) and both enjoyed their involvement with Legion Branch 182. Delphine wrote an extensive history of the women who served during WWII and presented a copy to the military museum, so that their contribution to the war effort will not be forgotten.
I love the photo above - it sums up her friendly and kind personality and her lovely smile. She will be missed.

As one of many amateur genealogists who benefited from her extensive research on the Cameron family tree, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the family. She was an interesting lady who set an example of how this research should be done. Thank you, Delphine, I shall miss your emails.

Mrs. Large was such a classy person who made you feel better everytime you came in contact with her. The opportunity to meet with her prior to her leaving North Bay was a great moment as we shared stories of our past. To all of the family, please accept my sincere condolences.

Reading Delphine's obituary this morning in the Times Colonist, brought back such memories of our days together in the Ex-Service Women's Branch #182 of the Royal Canadian Legion, Victoria, BC.
For many years Delphine was our Service Officer in the Branch and helped so many people. She was so proud to have served in the RCAF.
There are several of the old members still here and we spoke by phone this morning, of our memories of Delphine.
Please extend to the family our sincere condolences.

My mother had lost touch with all of her Canadian father’s family at an early age. Thanks to the internet in the late 90s I was able to find them. Delphine was her cousin and here they are during their first meeting. We have spent the last two decades meeting up with them in the US and Canada. Nothing is better than lost family found. We are so thankful for her research of our family as well. Rest in peace. We will miss her.
