Michael was a sweet and fun cousin. He felt special to me because we were the same age. I liked that he was always keen to get up to something adventurous and his fun sense of mischief. After childhood I didn’t see him for many years but I see from his obituary he grew to be a beautiful man - curious, adventurous and creative.
When I saw him again he was living in extended care at the hospital in Banff. Despite the difficulties of Huntington’s he was handsome and had a gentle dignity and grace. He had wonderful care there and was genuinely loved. We had a long walk along the Spray Lakes in the snow with one of his caregivers pushing his chair. I could tell he still had a great sense of humour and love of the outdoors - and we still loved each other in that way cousins do.
When we got back we listened to some of his favourite music, and had a long Skype chat set up by the caregivers with Tanya. I enjoyed that visit very much and will never forget it. It was so sad the next time I came to Banff to learn he had been moved elsewhere.
Michael, you were a lovely child and a beautiful man. I will miss you.
