Obituary of Evelyn Yvonne Yelds

Please share a memory of Evelyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Evelyn Yelds, of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at the age of 80 years.

Evelyn was born in Russell, Manitoba on September 27, 1939. She spent the majority of her life in BC; graduating from Armstrong High School, raising a much loved daughter in Vernon and then Vancouver, where she resided until shortly after she retired from Canada Post and moved to Calgary in 2001.

Evelyn was a fiercely independent leader that was open to taking on challenges in her later life. She was in charge of the social activities at Dream Haven, her last home. Those social activities will never be the same. She decorated for every occasion and had all of the animated toys for each season for all to enjoy. Halloween was her favourite, with Christmas second.

There was a time she took up scrapbooking. Like everything, she excelled at this talent. If you are one of the lucky ones that possesses a scrapbook from her, you are indeed blessed.

Evelyn was a member of the Kensington Royal Canadian Legion and the Calgary Go-Getters. She also thoroughly enjoyed her time at The Coronation Street Meetings and fun events. Of course the people that attended were the main joy for her and the games.

She always looked forward to her annual visits to Vancouver, which she always loved – visiting all of her close friends and family while staying at her sister and brother in law’s home.

Evelyn was so happy to have had a recent visit to Vernon just last month, at which time she saw her high school best friend, Helen Mussenden. She also got to see her niece, Heater and great niece, Paisley, and then her sister, Marion and brother in law, Dave. This trip meant the world to her.

Family games was something she enjoyed immensely – she had a very competitive spirit. Everyone loved playing with her – fun times were had by all trying to escape “the look”.

Evelyn was the family matriarch and is survived by her daughter, Cindy and son-in-law, Bob; her granddaughter, Jasmine and Brent Leys, and their daughters, Kailey and Danielle; a second granddaughter, Natasha Sheremeto and her children, Logan, Austin, Chloe and Avianna. Evelyn also had remained close to her stepdaughter, Jan Dodge and all of her children and grandchildren.

Evelyn is also survived by her brother, Sid Young and sister in law, Margot; her sister, Marion Carr and brother in law, Dave; her six nieces, Linda, Sandra, Heather, Jennifer, Deanne and Allison; a nephew, Gary; as well as numerous cousins and great nieces and nephews.

Evelyn has left behind many, many friends of all generations as well. She will be dearly missed by them all.

Evelyn was a special friend to everyone that had the privilege to know her. She will be sorely missed and memories of her will be cherished forever. Love you Mom, Gramma, GG, Sis and Auntie!

A Celebration of Evelyn’s Life will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 – 4th Street NW, (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at 2:00 p.m.
