I have known the Wong family since I was born. My mother and father, as newlyweds, lived in the apartment above the café that the Wong family ran. Mum used to babysit Freda and Sandy, while Yon stayed at the cafe with his parents. Both mothers used to tell the story of how well the four of us played together with my speaking baby talk and everyone else speaking Chinese.
As adults we renewed our friendship in Calgary. Yon was my go-to contact when I began renovating up-market homes. He took my kitchen designs and made them to suit the needs of all age groups. Those designs are still appreciated and exclaimed over to this day.
Yonnie always stopped whatever he was doing and made time for my sons. He won't be forgotten by the Murray-Morris family.

I first met Yon in the early 50's (grade 2 or 3) and became great friends with him. I was at his house as much as my own until 1960 when we moved to the southern states. We resumed our friendship when our family moved back to Calgary (5 years later). One fond memory I have is when the throttle linkage on his Chevy Corvair broke and I said I could fix it. Yon had his doubts until I brought over my Meccano set. His eyes lit up (he was like that when he saw fun possibilities). Together we fixed the linkage and Yon was so happy that his car wasn't a junker after all. Funny, he said that the car actually ran better with our home made fix-it. I deeply regret not having a chance to "catch up with him", he will be missed by all of us who got to know this fun and multi talented person.

I am yet again amazed at how small a world it is. I did not know that Yonnie had been involved in Below The Arch music venue! The last time I saw Yon, was in a line up at a lovely old church waiting to get in to see a concert. I heard a voice behind me, turned around and there he was with two other folks. I grabbed him, hugged him and told him how great it was to see him! I am very glad to have this and other memories.

I grew up with the Wong’s as our other family, and Yonnie was a role model and a mentor for me. He introduced me to the world of computers and shared his love of flight and woodworking(I still work on a desk he made for me); a decade later, I discovered that, quite independently, I had also followed him into the world of film and video production. He helped shape my interests and so the course of my life. I will always be grateful to have known him and been even a small part of his adventure. Love and hugs.

I was saddebed to hear of Yon's passing. He slipped away so quickly, as he had always done. I imagined he would always be around. My memories of Yon are of driving around in his big car in high school; him bringing groceries to a starving hippie house; sitting in Arthur the tree with him; a trip to Banff listening to the Bee Gees on a snowy night that took forever; singing harmony with him while he played guitar with Bob; bonsai, orchids and cannabis plants; him teaching me how to make egg foo yung (I'm certain he was the only one who knew how to cook in the communal houses); him trying astral travelling after reading Lobsang Rampa's "The Third Eye", babysitting his mantel clock when he and Tom went to Toronto; his fantastic carpentry skills; a hike up the Sheep River with my family; his enthusiasm for recording the music events in Turner Valley; his 60th birthday party; his kind and gentle spirit; that smirk he always had on his face. What a wonderful man. I'm so glad I got to share a part of my life with him. Condolences to his family, friends and Jackie.

More than with other friends who have left us, I find it difficult to get my head around Yon’s passing. Yonnie was a bit of a recluse and a bonafide homebody during the past few years but he had an enduring quality that made it seem he would always be here. In many ways he is still here, because we all have the memories of his gentle spirit.
My fondest memories with Yon over the past 20 years or so, were the nights we spent together listening to music and watching music videos late into the night. Usually herbally enhanced, we were like two night owls who discovered and immersed ourselves into the vast collections of quality music available to us these days. True to his romantic spirit, Yon had a special affection for female vocalists and on more than a few occasions I witnessed him overcome with emotion, touched beyond words by the sheer beauty of pure voice and inspiring melody.
Yon had no leanings of thoughts regarding a life after death, but I believe he is one who will live with us, and in us, for many years to come.

Today I was thinking about Yon and maybe you guys don't know but he had a pretty wild side too. One day I had brought a new motorcycle, and I went by Yon's place to ask him if he would like to try a ride and he said "Yes". So, we went. And because we were 2 on the bike and I sat a little bit more striaght and we went over a little bit of the lift on the road, it was something you wouldn't notice 150 km speed. But the wind started to lift me off the seat, so we shut down. The plan was to go top speed but we only made it to 280 km speed, so he was a little bit crazy man there too. He will be missed. Jes

Cousin Yon...As I grew up as a youngster living in Calgary, Yonnie lived a block away from my parent's home. He was like a big brother to me, I recall frequent visits to the house to play his drum kit, he taught me how to play, "Bits and Pieces" (Dave Clark Five)..As we both grew older into our teens and young adulthood, we continued visits until the 80's when Yon moved to Black Diamond and myself to Vancouver. We often shared discussions about our interests and passions including music, arts, religion, and Yon's carpentry skills. I always admired & respected Yon for his distinctive lifestyle; he was a pioneer of the "hippie" culture who advocated, nonviolence, spirituality, non-materialism and love. After a 40 year gap, I was fortunate to meet up with Yon again last year at a dinner for my Mom's passing. He hadn't changed much and was still the passive, gentle, soft spoken person I knew. People like Yon are rare and he will be deeply missed by his Black Diamond community, friends and relatives..
