Obituary of Pearl Owen

Please share a memory of Pearl to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Pearl Owen (nee Bourbonniere) of Calgary, passed away on Monday, November 16, 2020 at the age of 94 years.

Pearl was not a conformer.  She never wanted a traditional funeral or for people to be sad, rather she wanted something of an “Irish Wake” where people would gather, tell funny stories, eat potluck and sweets, drink and listen to upbeat music.  This was just like the way she lived her life.

What makes up a life?  With Pearl, it was stories.  There was no telling of short stories with her.  If she brought you in, it would be for the long haul, weaving so many details and colours you swear you were along with her.

Pearl served as a “Wren” in the Canadian Navy in the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service during WW2 as a photographer.

Pearl loved to volunteer and did many stints of service with most notably, the Calgary Winter Festival, The Calgary International Organ Festival, and The Police and Fire Games among many others.

Pearl loved animals, taking time to walk my dog Quincy every day while I was at work.  Her days would be spent visiting with our favorite neighbour Irene drinking tea outside with the dogs at their sides.

Pearl had a sweet tooth and would give anyone the gears who came to visit without bringing treats.  I learned my love of baking through her with many hours of flopped cakes and burnt cookies that we still ate because even if it looked bad, it was still tasty in her eyes.  Hey mom, I think I finally have it right now.

Pearl is survived by daughter Naomi Owen, son Craig Bourbonniere (Shannon) of Calgary Alberta, as well as many extended family and loving friends who will miss her greatly.

Pearl was predeceased by her siblings Harvey Bourbonniere (Marion), Armand Latrielle, Ivette Heisz, and Irene Wieffering.

According to her wishes, no service or memorial will be held.  In lieu of flowers, please take the time to donate to your favorite animal charity on her behalf.
