Obituary of Mary Elizabeth WYATT

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Wyatt (nee Black) on Friday, January 29, 2021 at the age of 84.

Mary was born to Alexander Ruthven Black and Mary Margaret Black (Dyer) on May 10, 1936, in Calgary, Alberta.

On Christmas Eve, I stumbled through reading a sappy Christmas card at my Grandmother Mary’s bedside. Upon completion, she looked at me with a matter-of-a-fact expression and asked if I would write her obituary. Mary’s expression went soft and with a gentle laugh she then said, “nothing too mushy- just that I was here and now I’m gone”.

Mary was “the Boss” of our family, a beautiful Monarch, a guiding force. She was guarded but devoted, strong but fragile, possessing a magnitude of attributes that she selflessly gave to all of us. Mary was a smart woman with strong convictions; she never cowered from letting people know where she stood on issues. Whether it was Sunday dinners, quiet moments with Henry, lunch dates with her children, cheering her grandchildren and great-grandchildren on in their chosen passions, or late-night talks about politics, hockey, and world affairs, we all have memories of her playing an active role in our lives.

Mary guided us, challenged us, and gave us a space to celebrate our successes and pick up the pieces of our failures. Mary had a hand in raising all of us, it did not matter if you were younger or older than her, she had a lesson to teach - and left us better people because of it. As we grew, we took root in new places, extending her reach to new heights. We flourished as a testament to the care that Mary fed into each of us, as a Wife, as a Mother, as a Grandmother, and as a Friend. It was evident in these last months, as our extended circles started to surround this incredible woman that we orbited around, she is an enormous piece in all our lives then, now, and always.

In Mary’s words “She was here and now she’s gone”, but I will add; that Mary lives within all of us, her husband, best friend, and love of more than 67 years, her devoted children, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The force of her strength and tenderness of her love lives on. Thank you, Mary, thank you for all you gave, for all you were, thank you for what you forged. Yours is a legacy of love. You can rest peacefully now, secured in our memories, enclosed in our hearts, and cherished forever.

Mary is survived by her loving husband Henry Wyatt of 67 years. Lovingly remembered by her children, Kimberly Joan Borgerson (Wyatt), Karen Lea Adshade (Wyatt), and Donald Henry Wyatt; her grandchildren Christopher, Mikol, Jennifer, Jeremy, and Lea; her great-grandchildren Matthew, Wyatt, Lachlan, Jack, Autumn, Holden, and Nekoh.

Mary was predeceased by her parents Alexander and Mary Margaret Black, and her brother Jack Black.
