Obituary of Amarjeet Brar

Please share a memory of Amarjeet to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with immense sadness that we share news of the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Amarjeet Brar, on Sunday, July 25, 2021, at the age of 79 years.

Amarjeet was born on May 27, 1942, in Risalpore, India.  She was the fourth of five children. As the only daughter, she was beloved and doted on by her parents, particularly her father.  In Grade 8, Amarjeet went to boarding school and was inspired by those around her to work hard at her studies.  She went on to graduate from the University of Punjab with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and then went on to her Masters in Political Science from the University of Pune.

On March 14, 1965, Amarjeet married her husband, Jarnail Singh Brar, and immigrated to London, England.  Once in England, she was eager to continue studying at the London School of Economics.  Amarjeet and Jarnail soon welcomed their children, Sundeep and Seema.  She undertook all of the responsibilities of a wife, mother and student during this time.  Her efforts then were indicative of Amarjeet’s great devotion to her family and their wellbeing, throughout her life.

In 1976, Amarjeet moved with her family to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and found employment with the Wawanesa Insurance Company.   Once again, as was her nature, she worked diligently to settle her family in a new country.  Despite all the obstacles that came with being a recent immigrant, Amarjeet maintained her positivity and determination to build a better life for her children.  She made lifelong friends in Winnipeg, all of whom she considered her family.  There were countless good times during these years in Winnipeg as Amarjeet and Jarnail enjoyed the company of friends at many gatherings filled with music and song.

In 1981, the family moved to Calgary and, once again, Amarjeet dedicated herself to settling her family in a new city.  She was employed with TransAlta Utilities for several years.  Thereafter, she didn’t hesitate to take on whatever job she needed in order to help provide for her family.  This is her legacy: love for, and dedication to, her family.  In retirement, Amarjeet spent every possible moment with her grandchildren.  She was incredibly proud of each of them and nothing brought her more joy than caring for them.

She will be forever loved and missed by her family.

Amarjeet is survived by her husband, Jarnail, son, Sundeep, daughter, Seema, and son in law, Harjit.  She is also survived by four grandchildren: Neha, Kabir, Mira and Jia.  Further, she is survived by her brothers, Agiakar Singh Gill, Avtar Singh Gill, and Parupkar Singh Gill.

She was predeceased by her parents, Captain Jagir Singh Gill and Nand Kaur Gill, and her brother, Jugraj Singh Gill.

Final respects can be paid from 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm, with Funeral Services to follow at 1:00 pm on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at Calgary Crematorium & Funeral Services, located at 3210-4th Street NW (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery).
