Obituary of Eva Long

Please share a memory of Eva to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

In loving memory of Eva Long 1918 – 2021

I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of Eva Long (nee Osinchuk), beloved mother of Victoria Abramovitz (nee Long) of Calgary, on Sunday September 26, 2021, at the age of 103 years.

Eva was born in Mundare, Alberta into an extremely large family – she was the second oldest of many children – and she is the last of her generation to pass.  Eva looked after her brothers and sisters until the age of 15 when she had to leave home to look for work.

Eva held many interesting jobs and each one was an opportunity for her to learn; it soon became obvious that cooking and baking were Eva’s true calling.

Eva and Clarence met at a community dance, married, and decided to move to Calgary for more opportunity and a better life.

Eva worked for the Christie family for many years and cooked marvellous dinners especially at Christmas.  My favourite was when Eva cooked a suckling pig with all the trimmings for 250 people – all by herself with no help.  She was so very organized and efficient it truly was amazing.

My Mother worked very hard her entire life and endured many, many tragedies.  When my Dad died, her life became much harder but Eva always said “you must never give up; you must always put one foot in front of the other and move forward”.  This is how she lived her life.

Her example to me was something I strive to do each and every day.  She was an amazing, accomplished woman that I was so proud of.

Eva is survived by her daughter Victoria and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eva was predeceased by her parents William and Annie, husband Clarence, numerous brothers and sisters and her son-in-law Gerald.

The last few years of Eva’s life were at Bethany Harvest Hills long-term care.  I am indebted to each and every person that worked with Eva – the care she received was second to none and I believe these years were some of the best years of Eva’s life.  She was so well cared for by all of the staff and she was especially fond of the kitchen staff as she loved her food.  Thank you each and every one for making my Mothers last years so very happy.  She was so content and loved you all.  I will never be able to repay your kindness.

I also want to thank Fikerte for everything she did as companion to my Mom for a number of years.  Eva loved Fikerte and I am truly grateful for all she did for Eva – especially loving her for the amazing lady she was.

There will never be a soul as precious as Eva – I love her very much and will miss her everyday.
