Obituary of Surendra Kumar Bhandari
Surendra Bhandari, beloved husband of Pratibha Rani Bhandari (nee Horra), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at the age of 79 years. Surendra was born in Nairobi, Kenya on December 17,1941. Surendra married Pratibha on his birthday in 1967. They moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1968.
He worked as a Structural Draftsman for Conforce Structures, Genstar, and Stantec. Surendra was part of the Board of Trustees for the Hindu Society of Calgary for a number of years and volunteered extensively for the India Canada Association. He was also one of the founders and President of COFEA .
Surendra loved cricket with a passion and all other sports. He represented Kenya and Canada internationally in cricket. He also represented Kenya and Alberta in many national table tennis tournaments. He successfully defended the Kenya National Triple Crown in 1965 and 1966 and was also Alberta Provincial champion in the late 1970’s. He was a devoted cricket coach who loved to coach and watch his children and grandchildren play. He always loved to say, "I don't like Cricket, I LOVE IT!"
Surendra accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of the numerous service awards for volunteering at the Hindu Society of Calgary. He was a leading force in the construction and maintenance of the Hindu Temple.
Surendra is known to be a very jovial, athletic and loving human being who devoted much of his time to family and community.
Besides his loving wife Pratibha, he is survived by his children, Sanjay (Nikki), Ashish (Zaiba) both of Calgary, Ekta (Kulvir) of Winnipeg; Five grandchildren, Sachin, Calgary, Sakshi , Winnipeg, Kaithen Calgary, Ananda, Winnipeg, and Kaysan, Calgary. As well as numerous siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Surendra was predeceased by his parents, Gurdass Ram Bhandari and Satyawati Bhandari (nee Lekhi) .
Funeral Services will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 – 4th Street NW, (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at 2:00p.m.
Those attending will be asked to confirm, proof of COVID vaccination (preferably QR code), and valid government identification (with name & date of birth).
