Obituary of Roger Wheatley

Please share a memory of Roger to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Roger Wheatley of Calgary, AB, just shy of his 90th birthday, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 30, 2021.

A born and raised Calgarian, Roger met and married Betty in 1955. Together they raised their three children while exploring their passions for travel, camping, and gardening. The family also enjoyed attending sporting events with the Calgary Stampeders and the Calgary Cannons baseball. Together, Roger and Betty were avid bridge players, and curled as charter members at the Calgary Winter Club. Roger was fond of the outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing. This led to another passion, where his attention to detail and talent for craftsmanship, was evident in his award-winning waterfowl and wildlife woodcarvings.

Roger accomplished much throughout his life and was particularly proud of his forty years with TransAlta Utilities (formerly Calgary Power) as a surveyor. Upon retiring, he and Betty spent winters in Mesa, AZ where he would focus on carving, gardening, and walking his much-loved dog Taffy. A lover of dogs, Roger will be met with much rejoicing and love at the Rainbow Bridge by Major, Ginger, two Sandys and Taffy. He will ensure that no dog will ever get in trouble for taking treats from the dinner table hereafter and, of course, there will be a seat for all at the picnic table for morning toasted bread and dog treats.

A devoted and kind man with a quick wit, Roger, will be lovingly remembered by his wife Betty of sixty-six years, his two children, Dean (Linnea), and Jo-Ann (Roger); five grandchildren, and his sister Nancy.

Roger was predeceased by his daughter Sharon, loving parents, Isabella, and John; and brothers, William, and George.
