I met Anna at Heritage Park where I was a volunteer, retired from the business world. I was so impressed by Anna's ease with visitors, her knowledge of nature and her genuine warmth. Anna will always remain a guide who quietly inspires those who wish to live a good life. I'm glad that I met her. Ken McGuire

Anna and I met in kindergarten class at Hillhurst Community School. I wanted to be friends so badly, and lucky for me we ended up living on the same street. Right up until 12th grade we had lots of adventures on the way to and from school: Walking home in bare feet over wet icy sidewalks when chinooks came, spitting off the 14th Street pedestrian overpass (my bad influence), getting soaked by sudden rainstorms, and stopping by North Hill Mall to get a whole rotisserie chicken or two Mama Burgers (for five dollars!) to eat in the park.
Anna was 11 months older than me and all through school I felt safest in her shadow. Whatever club Anna was joining, I wanted to join too - cross country running, beading, knitting, leadership, recycling, track and field, band. While I struggled through things - frozen by perfectionism and shyness, or accidently daydreaming when the rules were being explained - Anna seemed able to befriend anyone, and do anything and everything that sparked her interest. Anna and I both ended up at UVic for undergrad and I was fortunate to be her roommate her last year in Victoria. She helped me to feel confident riding my bike on the roads here, running the trails around Mount Doug (PKOLS), and attending yoga classes downtown.
When we graduated from undergrad we didn't see as much of each other. As time passed I think I thought to myself "we are both finding our way with adult life, and soon we will run into each other when we are both back home. We will go out for a long walk like we always do". I wasn't worried - our friendship had the strongest foundation of any relationship in my life.
Anna, you are such a big part of my heart, and your voice is so clear in my mind. I watched Father of the Bride last night and remembered the many movies we watched on repeat in your parents' basement. Next up is Father of the Bride 2, and then maybe some Pink Panther or Fawlty Towers. Thank you for all the laughs, for seeing me through so many years, and for being my brave, cool, fun, capable, lively, warm, rock solid friend.
Margot, Richard, and Simon, I am so sorry. My heart is with you.

Anna and I worked together at Heritage Park, and although for only a short while, she inspired me to be in better shape and to always appreciate the outdoors. She was such a go-getter and was always in a great mood. I was greatly inspired by her spirit and I have no doubt her almost 34 years on this planet were filled to the brim. Rest In Peace

Anna was a summer camp leader at our Centre many years ago. This is one of my favourite camp photos of all time — Anna leading campers out to explore an eelgrass meadow on Sidney Island.
I am saddened to hear about Anna's passing. I remember her as always being kind and positive.
Condolences to her family and friends,

In September 2020, Anna enrolled in the Master of Arts program in Human Geography at the U of A. She joined my research team, the Human Dimensions of Hazards research group (see photo), and her research was part of the First Nations Wildfire Evacuation Partnership. Anna's dedication to her Masters program was apparent when she was first diagnosed with cancer but wanted to continue her studies. She completed the three courses for her masters program in her first year, and was excited to start her research about communities that host First Nations during wildfires. Although the Covid pandemic meant that Anna was unable to spend time with team members in our research lab on campus, we enjoyed in-person walks around campus and research group meetings via zoom. We fondly remember Anna's enthusiasm, dedication, kindness, and her smile. She is dearly missed by research group members Gabrielle Ayres, Nathan Polard-Yopek, Maia Foster-Sanchez, Nic Basque, and by her supervisor Tara McGee.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are when Anna and Simon would come for visits to Ontario, especially the times we were all up at the cottage. Even at such a young age, it was always clear to me how much Anna loved the outdoors. Anna, Simon, Amelia, Jacob and myself would have such a blast running around in the woods, playing in the lake, climbing on the rocks, enjoying bonfires and watching movies before bed. I will always cherish these memories and hold them close to my heart.

Thinking of my dear friend Anna Dahonick every day on my runs and skis these days. Anna passed away early in January. It's been a very sad time for anyone who knew the bright light of energy, optimism and life that Anna was.
Anna was one of the funniest people I have every meet - even when she was going through difficult cancer treatments and low on energy she made me laugh harder in my 2 days with her last spring than I had in weeks.
From meeting when we were 13 yo at summer camp, to doing literally every activity together in high school (biathlon, cross country running, yoga, dodgeball, and more summer camp) every strained muscle and tired lung and too cold or too hot night/evening/day was a joy when it was spent with her.
Ima try my best to ski 34 km in memory of Anna on Feb 19, what would have been her 34th birthday. Please join me from wherever you are to celebrate her life. - https://fb.me/e/27BRcvq3F - that is the facebook link

My heart goes out to all who loved Anna - to her parents, brother, extended family, Curtis, and her dearest friends. She was an exceptional person, someone I wish I'd known better, but am so grateful to have known at all.
I only knew Anna slightly, from her time in Waterton. She was always a bright, cheery, warm person, easy to share a laugh with. Every chat with her, however brief and inconsequential, left me smiling. I thought of her as someone I'd like to know better, and thought how lucky her friends were. When she joined the Occupational Health & Safety Committee for the park, I came to know her as a hard worker, engaged with the issues, taking her role on the committee seriously and giving it her all. I respected her passion and integrity, her curiosity, her willingness to ask questions until she had drilled as far as she could go. She wasn't interested in a superficial understanding of the issues, she wanted to understand the issues fully. She wanted to learn. And she wanted to make a real contribution. Which she did. I appreciated her insights, her input, how much she cared about making the workplace as safe as it could be for everyone. She had her priorities straight.
I was sorry when she left Waterton, but wished her well at Elk Island. When I unexpectedly needed her help with a project, I didn't hesitate to reach out, certain that Anna being Anna, she'd love to help (she did). That phone call was the last time I spoke to her - as someone with a background in anthropology and conservation, I was so interested to learn of the topic she had chosen for her Masters degree; we must have talked for a good two hours - I admit I spun our call out because it was such a pleasure to connect with Anna again, and our conversation was so stimulating. I was so happy for her.
That Anna was unable to fulfill her Masters and career dreams is grievous - she had all the promise in the world and would have succeeded at whatever she set her mind to. But she made such a difference in so many other ways - I just think of all those kids who saw her programs and were inspired - whose curiosity about the natural world was sparked by Anna, who will grow up making a difference in their own ways. The ripples of Anna's life will continue to make a positive, lasting difference in the lives of so many, even if they only met or saw her once. What a fantastic legacy.
I will remember Anna for the light she brought with her wherever she went - a light I will feel, with gratitude for her life - whenever I think of her.
Wishing peace and comfort to all who loved her, Mary

I met Anna while working at Elk Island in the summer of 2020. Although we only worked in person together for a couple of months, we clicked really quickly. She was an amazing person to be around with an infectious energy. We always had the best time working together. Most of the folks who know Anna from Elk Island met her the summer of 2020 when she filled an interpretive position focused on fire and grassland restoration. While the summer of 2020 was a wild time of adapting to COVID-realities, Anna was a seasoned interpreter who brought calm and poise to all of her programs and interactions. Within the short operational season, Anna developed programs as witty as ‘Bison Pies’ - “before they go in the oven”, as she would say - and helped visitors find the beauty in the aftermath of fires through a charcoal art program. Anna’s expertise in fire and interpretation meant that she was the perfect fit to kick start these programs in a year that was challenging for interpretation.
Anna brought so many laughs, smiles, and so much joy to the Elk Island team throughout her time working here. Anna’s colleagues, Nicole and Nadina, shared a video that Anna and Nadina had made for Nicole to send her support and love through the form of a cheerleading routine. This is just one example of how Anna forged deep, meaningful connections with the people she met. Anna was many things: a mentor, a sage sounding board, and partner in adventure for so many. Anna will be deeply missed and always remembered through many fond memories.
Attached are a few photos of Anna with members of the interpretation team from Elk Island from the summer of 2020.

Anna was an amazing friend, roommate, colleague, and adventure buddy. We met at the Yoho bunkhouse in Field where she impressed me with her love for fish (and wearing fish hats!). Anna was the most genuine person I’ve ever met. She was always authentically herself in every scenario. I drove from Invermere to Calgary the other day and there were Anna memories all along the way: Hiking to Floe Lake, cycling in a rainstorm on the Bow Valley Parkway, sleepovers at her Banff house, dancing at The Rose, skiing at Pocaterra, and cups of tea in our living room in Calgary. Anna made a big impact on my life and I know she will continue to. I will miss Anna so much and so will my mom, sister, partner Greg and Aunt Nancy. Lots of love to the Dahonick family and Curtis.

I met Anna in Waterton. Although she was half my age, her wisdom far surpassed mine. We, along with Bre, shared an equipped camping experience in Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. We walked and waded and chatted and absorbed the wonders of the park. We shared meals. I thoroughly enjoyed Anna's company. She really did make the most of her life. To her friends and family who knew her best, please know that I am deeply saddened for your loss.

Where do I start... I know Anna as I was her triathlon coach for a few years. Anna was light, the most beautiful soul. She had this grace about her and we instantly connected. I saw Anna as a strong woman, a woman that did not give up, a woman that was determined, and when she had her heart set on something she would go after it in Anna's way.
I saw Anna achieve quite a few triathlons and then I saw her grow into other amazing things in her life.
Anna left a mark in so many people's hearts, her gentleness, compassion, and dedication to life.
Sending you so much love to all of Anna's family and friends.
Much heart, and love

I worked with Anna at Elk Island National Park the summer of 2020. I sent the following message for Anna to her Aunt Barb just before Anna passed. I haven't been able to think of a better way to state my feelings, so I'll share it again here.
-------
Anna,
I've just heard about you and the cancer from a work e-mail. I'm bad at keeping up with people I care about -- I have a hard enough time with my parents, let alone my family and friends. I'm sorry I didn't reach out earlier. I can only imagine what you've been thinking and feeling this past year and past month.
You've always felt like a kindred spirit to me. We're around the same age, we both spent around a decade in Parks Canada, interpretation, running, fire, French. There's so much I appreciate about our time together. Your smile, your laugh; I appreciated how experienced you are with interpretation, and how you used it to empower others when you could have lorded it over them. Your help with my themes was especially appreciated. I appreciated your love of life; I enjoyed our conversations while weed-pulling in the bison loop or during our many lunch-time French conversations. I keyed off of your energy, and how you would go for runs after work in Millcreek and your interest in fire. We didn't know each other for long, but you made an impression on me.
My grandma passed this summer from stomach cancer, and through that process a quote from the comedian Norm MacDonald stuck with me: "When I hear a guy lost a battle to cancer, that really did bother me, that that's a term. It implies he failed and that somebody else that defeated cancer is heroic and courageous. I'm pretty sure, I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure if you die, the cancer dies at the same time. That's not a loss. That's a draw".
I've been thinking of our mortality over this last year, strangely enough. When I pass, my dearest hope is that I've made some sort of impression on the world around me, and the people that I connected with. I want you to know you have made an impact on my life. Seeing your passion and your expertise inspires me to be a better interpreter.
I appreciate you, Anna.
With love,
Tristan
-------
Seeing the other thoughts and memories shared here, I can see that Anna made a great many, deep impressions on many people. May we all be like Anna.
My love and thoughts to her family.

I am heartbroken by this news. For Anna’s parents, family, friends: I cannot imagine your pain and I am so, so, so sorry. I was Anna’s resident advisor during her first year of university at UVic. She and her tight knit group of girlfriends brought light and laughter to our home-away-from-home. She was joy and adventure, personified. She was energy and happiness, embodied. She was a role model, a friend, a leader in her example. She will be remembered and celebrated.

Anna was my oldest friend, and I have struggled to know where to even begin. She was such a unique and incredible person, as well as a dear friend. In this 2013 photo, she had successfully convinced me to take her and some hitchhikers she had met backcountry backpacking near Golden BC, which to me, sums up her spirit of adventure so well. New people, old friends, and exploring the natural world. I always admired her solid sense of self, and her realism, and I value the memories we have shared through the years. She will always be with me, both in memories, and in the habits she helped me form. I'll think of her as I always do when I get a new tea, a good book, a freshly cleaned yoga mat, and so many other little things that are a part of my life as much as she was.

Anna was our special niece and cousin who truly embraced life. We remember many wonderful ski and hiking adventures, as well as dinners, picnics, and excursions of all sorts experienced with Anna, her parents, Richard and Margot, and brother, Simon. We also just enjoyed hanging out together, spending time in backyards and parks and of course stops at local ice-cream and coffee shops. Anna was always an attentive and kind older cousin as well as role model to both Amelia and Jacob. As she got older she was not always in Calgary for our annual trip. It was a special event, then, when Anna stayed with us in Toronto en route to other more exotic destinations. We puttered in local shops for tea and trinkets and cooked up a storm as the photo attests. The dish that night was tortilla soup!
There were several memorable hiking trips including Lake O'Hara and Sunshine Meadows. We all respected Anna's expertise, strength, and calm demeanor in the mountains. We never heard her complain of being tired, unlike the rest of us. On one memorable hike we encountered a mother grizzly bear playing with her two cubs just across Grizzly Lake. Interestingly, this was just around the time that Anna became a bear guardian for Parks Canada.
We mourn the loss of a person full of radiance, vitality and passion who meant the world to us and who had so much to offer.
Anna, you will be in our hearts forever.

Anna was beautiful and outgoing and engaging. We are friends with Margot and Richard, and when Anna was in town she sometimes came over with them for parties and Christmas Eve drinks. It is testament to her lovely personality that she and Simon and my daughter, who is pretty much an anti-social hermit, stayed up all night by the fire one new year’s eve talking after the old folks had gone to bed. When Margot found out, she was very concerned the kids had kept us up. We assured her they had been quiet and we were happy they had such a good time. I’m looking at our flickering candle as I write this. Rest in Peace, Anna.

I met Anna in Banff, AB, when she was living and working for Parks Canada. We had a great mutual friend Nate Clark, and through him we started meeting up to do activities. The best of which was our three night four day canoe trip on the Red Deer River. There was 6 of us, in 3 canoes. Travelling from Red Deer to Drumheller So much positive energy padding along, a highlight each night was hearing Anna read aloud one of Stuart Mcleans Vinyl Cafe stories. Also a highlight was the raising of the blue flag at 5pm from her and Nate's canoe which highlighted the time to gather for happy hour, and enjoy a G and G ( Gatorade and Gin).
Both of us continued to work in interpretation, and so I met up with Anna again a few times in Waterton, in Winnipeg and Spokane WA, for various work functions and learning opportunities. Always happy to reconnect when we did. Like many I am truly saddened by her loss. She was truly a beautiful person. My condolences to her family and close friends.

The trails down here in Waterton and Castle will forever be brighter after Anna ran them with us. In this photo we had jogged up to just below loaf mtn when the wind picked up and nearly took the three of us down the valley with it. As we ran back down the trail, I remember Anna joking about how in Alberta you should always run into the Wind first, so it's at your back on the way home and you feel like a Rockstar! It was so fitting becuase that summer she had made a presentation about how the wind helped shape Watertons ecosystem. I always felt peace and excitement when I was with Anna, I am forever grateful that I got to share some adventures with her.

Seems like it was just yesterday, Anna was visiting in Vancouver in 2019 and sharing about her plans to join the University of Alberta MA program in Earth & Atmospheric sciences. A lively siblings' discussion about career paths followed:)
It was inspiring to hear about Anna's interests and aspirations to extend even further her skills and knowledge in the sphere of her work, in contributing to improving people's lives and supporting our environment.
When I think of Anna, I see her radiant smiling face. She was radiating warmth and joy during her life, and her memory will continue radiating warmth and love in our hearts every day.
