Ardith and Andy Blumenthal
I met Skip in 1977 when I first came to Calgary from New York on business. Since then, he, Kathy, and I traveled together extensively, beginning in London where they met my then girlfriend Ardith, taking me aside and instructing me to marry her, probably the best advice they ever gave anyone; the next time the four of us got together was at my wedding to Ardith.
Our travel adventures took us to Hawai’i, throughout western Canada (including a 12,000 foot hike – Skip called it a hike – to the Burgess Shale to search for trilobites), to Italy where we searched for Skip’s Galleli family roots in Albi, Italy (and we found ‘em, as the accompanying photo shows). And many people know the story of our adventure when he, Kathy, Barry and Sherry Emes visited me in New York.
Skip and I had many shooting adventures together, taking classes at the famous Gunsite Academy and then going to Las Vegas for the biggest firearms exposition in North America. He really was expert in the area.
He was also expert in real estate development and I often sought (and applied) his advice in understanding and negotiating contracts when I returned to New York, since his expertise extended to US real estate.
Everyone who knew Skip has Skip stories, whether it was Skip and Andy; Skip and Jack Donohue, Skip and Ron Reno, Skip and Dave Underdahl, Skip and Rick Ostashower, Skip and Norm Green, Skip and Sheldon Chumir, and so on. The cementing thread running through all of them is, and will remain, Skip.

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Skip. When I entered the real estate development business in 1978, Skip and his partner Greg Horton were working at Stewart Green Properties before they launched their partnership Horton McDonald. While working at Trojan Development, I had the opportunity to work on 2 of their projects Willowpark Shopping Centre and Hunterhorn Plaza. This was a great learning opportunity for me for which I am grateful. Skip fully understood the opportunities as well as the high risks in the real estate development business. He also treated suppliers honourably. Although I have not seen Skip for some time, I will miss his laugh and sense of humour.

We are so sad to hear of Skip’s passing. He was a wonderful person who I enjoyed sharing an office space with for many years. Skip was my Brittany Spaniel mentor and we had many conversations about hunting experiences. Oh, and Skip and I also shared an appreciation of good quality Scotch. I’ll raise a dram in his honour.

So sorry to hear of Skip's passing. I worked with him many years ago at Stewart Green Properties, and have only good
memories. But I had lost track of him and did not know of the cancer diagnosis. My thoughts are with you.

I knew Skip only briefly in his capacity as the Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of The Calgary Highlanders. I vividly recall us having our photograph taken with the Queen at the Calgary Military Museum in the early 2000's, a copy of which I still have. He struck me as a passionate and compassionate man with a profound sense of community, citizenship, and humanity. He was very much respected in the Regiment and it is a testament to his outstanding character that my dear freind, Rick Ostashower, whom I admire greatly, had such a close relationship with Skip. I know he will be sorely missed by family and friends alike. I offer my deepest condolences and prayers to his loved ones. Rest in peace!

Kathy, there's no need to go into detail. Skip and I spoke virtually every day over the past several years, mostly initiated by him. I always felt somewht adrift when he didn't call. You two opening your home to our herd of pups are some of the highlights of our visits, perhaps crowned by the blessing of the animals and the look of absolute astonishment when the Priest learned Maccabee's name.
There is a hole in our lives never to be filled, and many a toast and a glass ha been and will continue to be raised to him as long as the there are those of us who had the honour, privilege and sheer fun of knowing him. Nary a day went by that I didn't learn and laugh at something from him, and I am far the richer for all the experiences.
You know we will always be here for you, in person and thought.

Dear Kathy: Skip and I met 50 years ago at Pogues Athletic Club, he quickly became a friend, mentor, and the big brother I never had. We had a common interest in sports and fitness through Pogues, Bankers Hall, and lately the Bow Valley Club. I enjoyed the Sunday phone conversations, covering sports, current events, skiing, his career, even Skip's childhood in Parkdale. My favourite memory is Valentine's day 1998, when you and Skip took me to dinner and a movie (Blues Brothers 2000) while I was working in Calgary and my family was still in Kelowna. In the mid 70s, he often treated me to rides home in the huge 76 silver Thunderbird, with 8 track playing Gloria Gaynor disco.
In recent years, lunches with Skip and Jsck were the highlights of my social calendar. Jack and I will miss him greatly, but have many memories of Skip to reminisce about. Thank you for the great care you took of our friend these past few years when he wasn't 100 per cent, you were a loyal, patient, and loving wife to him. Take care, see you soon,
Dave Underdahl

Dear Kathy,
This was very painful news. I loved you both like family. Skip always showed me the man I wanted to become, always caring about my life, you, loyal to his core, a gentleman, and an officer that always showed the world a brave, strong face. My heart truly goes out to you.

Kathy. We were sorry to learn of Skip’s death. And we are sending love to you.
I have two very clear memories out of many. One was a dinner at our house with you guys and Anne Van Dusen and others, that I remember as being a very fun and funny long meal. The other is when we all took our jeeps out to the Kannanaskis and we explored and hiked and stopped by a shallow part of a river to eat. I remember us playing Rains Down in Africa over and over! Whenever I hear it I think of Skip and that day. Always will. Love to you! Katie and Pacey

Dear Kathy,
Skip was the rock that anchored us all when we needed it most. He knew everybody and was loved by all. I will miss his quick sports updates and rapid fire approach to obstacles that stood in our way. A true Calgarian forever written in it's destiny. Amen.
