Obituary of Susanne Harich
July 11, 1931 – Sarvas, Yugoslavia
July 13, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta
Susanne Harich, beloved wife of the Late Johann Harich, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at the age of 91 years.
Susanne was born in the German speaking village of Sarvas, Yugoslavia. She immigrated to Calgary, AB, Canada in 1960 after living in Australia, and before that, in Austria with her young family.
Susanne, her siblings and her parents faced many challenges after the conclusion of World War II. She met Johann and they married in 1947. In pursuit of freedom, security, and a better life, Susanne and Johann emigrated from Yugoslavia. They started their family in Austria and began the journey to Australia by ship finally reuniting in Calgary with her sister in 1960.
She was a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Parish, attending Mass there regularly and then at Ascension Catholic Parish.
Susanne accomplished much throughout her life and was especially proud of her family, her home and her garden. She loved baking and enjoyed cooking traditional central European dishes. She was renowned for her apfel bitten (a classic German apple pastry).
Susanne is survived by her daughter Christine Haigh of Calgary, AB; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Alexander and Susan of Kelowna, BC, and Andrew and Carrie of Calgary, AB; four grandchildren, James of Saskatoon, SK, Michelle of Priddis, AB, and Jonas and Nicolla of Calgary, AB; and two great-grandchildren, Roman and Ashlee of Saskatoon, SK. Susanne is also survived by her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends in Canada, the USA, and in Europe.
Besides her loving husband Johann, Susanne was predeceased by parents, Andreas and Theresa, brother Matthias and sister Maria.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Calgary Crematorium Chapel, (3219 – 4th Street NW, within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Monday, July 18, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church (1100 Berkshire Blvd Northwest, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Reception to follow at the home of Andrew and Carrie Harich following the Graveside Service. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
