Please accept our condolences. John was a friend from University of The West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago where we both studied Engineering. I cannot recall ever seeing him angry or even perturbed. He had a quiet smile on his face whenever I saw him and he was a pretty calm person. To his family, please know that he will be missed and our group, called Hermits, will always remember the good time we had with him. God Bless. Chris Chaplin

John and I were very close from the time he came to Calgary. We had no choice. All the Sr. Engineers except Chris Himsl had left and we needed help. John came into my career when I was about 25 and had an impact until I turned 45. He always told me I had more, no matter how hard I tried or what I did. He pushed me to the point of having no fun then we would go have a beer. He convinced me and my future wife (who was working with us at the time) that Iraq would be another step and I would fit perfectly. After alot of discussion, (John and my future wife) it was decided that I would go with him to Iraq. John told me this over a beer before i went home to Kim. The 2 of us drank alot of beer and accomplished alot together, He was my best friend, and boss for soo many years. I have attached a few pics of our time in Iraq. I know i have so many more...RIP JOHN!!

John Munroe was one of my favourite on this planet! His smile was contagious and it was impossible to be in a bad mood when John was present.
I had the privilege of both working with John and to have him as a friend. In the industry, John is highly respected and his wealth of knowledge benefited many. I loved his curiosity and desire to make buildings and spaces better - they couldn’t just look nice, but rather had to work and be sustainable.
I will miss catching up and hearing about all of his new adventures over dim sum. Rest In Peace my dear friend and thank for lighting up every room you ever entered!
Marjorie and the extended Munroe family - my sincere condolences. Please reach out if there is anything I can do during your time of healing - dim sum included. Thank you for sharing such a remarkable human being with us!

I had the pleasure working with John on Manitoba Hydro, which became our first collaboration and the starting point of a great friendship. I will never forget our trip to Moscow and some others occasion we got together in Canada or Germany - like the Oktoberfest. The picture had been taken and the opening ceremony of Manitoba Hydro. The only time I saw John in a suit and a tie. Even though we haven't seen each other often, I and the entire team will miss him! Condolences to Marjorie and kids.

I met John on his wedding day, but it wasn’t until later that same summer that I got to see him in his natural state … running a tight ship in a ragatta over in Port Credit where he and his crew graciously accepted me in the role of “deck fluff”
I was enchanted. His stories and humour from that visit still make me smile all these years later.
His rally racing was something I admired as well, and I will never forget watching the Rally of the Tall Pines event. His team (which included my father), invited my nephew Wilder to sit in the car provided he didn’t touch any buttons, and young Wilder took a few minutes to seriously contemplate the offer, eventually concluding, much to John’s amusement, that he couldn’t sit in the car because he wouldn’t “be able to not touch the buttons.”
I cannot express how hard this loss has left a hole in my heart nor can I imagine what you, my sweet cousins, must feel. I love you and wish with all my heart that this message was not necessary. All my love and affection and my very deepest condolences to his beautiful family and his many, many friends. See you across the waves and in the next stage and thanks for the memories, John

Marjorie and family. The laugh. The laugh is what I will always remember. On the occasions where we would gather at a pub sharing drinks with colleagues and friends, the laugh would rise above all else. It might be a story being told I couldn’t relate to, it might be a story I couldn’t hear because of the background noise or it might be a story I didn’t find funny, but then the laugh started and then the laugh grew. It grew to the point where John would remove his glasses, raise a hand to his forehead and then down to his eyes and wipe the tears from his eyes. At that point the laugh was so infectious that the whole table was in tears of laughter regardless of the story being told. The laugh is what I will always remember.

What a beautiful memorial. Dear Marjorie, Ceilidh, and Evan,
Apologies for not joining you in person for the memorial, but Covid19 has hit us hard after our trip; fortunately we were able to watch the livestream. Once again our condolences on the loss of 'Munroe' as many who told his great stories called him. We often missed many of the big family gatherings, but the few times we spoke with him were always a pleasure.
One main memory of John is when we were all at the cottage in Kaszuby and he was *always* sitting with a book on the deck of one of the pods and reading all day long!!!
Love Daniel & Stephen

Marjorie & kids - I remember one of my earliest encounters with John. He was watching his crazy neighbour trying to use ropes and pulleys to get some OSB sheets up onto the roof of the treehouse he was building for his kids. A bit of a spectacle. He shouted his offer to help over the back fence which I laughingly declined as it turned out "this stubborn engineer" (me) was going to get the roof in place with no help. That was part of the whole adventure of building the treehouse. I think John related to this response as he raised a glass to me and wished me "best of luck".
Lots of laughs and stories followed like the time Reece was playing goalie for the boy's soccer team. I walked up mid-game and asked John what the score was. He said 9-0 for them. I said "S**t - Reece will be devastated" to which John laughed and said "without him it would be 18-0".
Our hearts go out to you and your family - we are truly sorry for your loss.

John shared the passion in what he did with others to great effect. He was the first person I met in the racing world, the first to give me a ride around the test track, and the first to welcome me into rally. John played a huge role in setting me on the right track for what would ultimately become a lasting hobby of mine. My world has become better for having met John. I will miss his presence and will cherish the memories.

Marjorie, Ceilidh and Evan. We are so sorry for your loss. Cherish the memories and the great times you spent together. Even though several years went by without seeing each other, you were thought of often with a smile. So thankful Carrie and I were able to share laughs over a meal and a cocktail last fall.
If you need anything, don't hesitate to reach out.

John was an invaluable and unforgettable mentor to me. His delightful sense of humor took a little getting used to at first, as I was never quite sure if he was being serious or funny, and then his cheeky grin would appear across his face and I would know the answer was funny :)
I always enjoyed his stories and hearing about his epic life experiences and adventures. It brings comfort knowing John truly did live his life to the fullest!!!
Rest in peace and stay cheeky John ;)

It was such a pleasure to work with John. He was such a gentleman and always had a big smile on his face. My favourite memory was when he taught a few of us how to dance Jamaican style at a work event in Vancouver. He will be missed by all that were lucky enough to know him. Condolences to Marjorie and kids.

John was the one we could always count on to catch errors buried deep in documents. He had an eagle eye when it came to noticing important details that would have problematic if not detected and fixed.
More importantly, John was my mentor and who helped me recognize my potential and grow as a professional.
