May 3, 1943 - Dresden, Germany

July 31, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Mike Schubert of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at the age of 79 years.

Mike was born in Dresden, Germany, on May 3, 1943. He immigrated, with his parents and sisters, to Ponoka, Alberta, Canada, in 1952. The family moved to Fairview, Alberta, for a few years, until settling in Red Deer, Alberta, in 1959. It was here that he met the love of his life Joane, at Red Deer Composite High School. They married in 1964 and were together until her passing in 2009.

Mike graduated from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology as an Instrument Technician, with a background in organic chemistry. He worked for Environment Canada for many years, in Edmonton, Alberta, Amherstburg, Ontario, and Calgary, Alberta, until the Calgary lab closed in 1992. He then worked for the city of Calgary, first for Waterworks, then Environmental Sciences, until his retirement in 2008.

Because he had a passion for the wellbeing of people and the environment, Mike was a lifelong supporter of the NDP Party of Alberta. He volunteered his time in multiple campaigns (one successful).

All his life, Mike enjoyed gardening; getting his hands in the soil, planting things, watching them grow. Also, because of his passion for the environment, he was constantly pursuing a more sustainable means of living. Hence, the solar array on the roof of his house and the electric vehicles. Mike will be most remembered for his story telling. He always took great pride in recounting his, and Joane’s family history.

Mike is survived by his two sons, Christopher Schubert and Justin Schubert, and two sisters, Marlies Noble and Gesine Welch. Mike is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Mike Noble, Douglas Cardinal, Ron Cardinal, Robert Cardinal, Mike King; sisters-in-law, Carol King, Adoia Arana-Beobide Cardinal, Carla Kalke, Judy Cardinal, and Jennifer Cardinal. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mike was predeceased by his wife, Joane Cardinal-Schubert, his father, Ernst Joachim Schubert, his mother, Margaret Schubert; and his brothers-in-law, Richard Welch, Reiner Paellmann, Ken Cardinal, Brian Cardinal, David Cardinal.
