Ralph was my friend for over 45 years! We met in the seventies and even though there were times that we both lived in separate parts of this world and experienced a bit of drifting apart, it was in 2015 that we both were back in Calgary. When we met again after so many years, It was as if we had been never apart and our friendship continued as before.
Talking and discussing about the politics in Alberta, Canada and the situation of the world, what happened in our own lives and how the Lord in all things was our centre piece. There was never a dull moment with Ralph as his interests and incites were always meaningful and up to date. He was always dedicated to the well-being of Gertie and his family, his love for God and His Son Jesus.
I think the deepest impact Ralph made in my life was the fact that he questioned just about all things before he would draw any conclusions. Questioning his faith and asking, in the early days of our friendship, the question why we are going to church, tuned out to be one of those questions that brought me to a deeper understanding of my own faith and was the start of many great and deep discussions about our faith.
I will miss him, but I also know that we will meet again!
See you soon Ralph!

Dear Marlene,
I was deeply saddened to learn about the passing of your beloved father, Ralph. The loss of a parent is something no one of us ever wants to experience, no matter their age or circumstance. I hope that you, your dear mom Gertie, and all the members of the Hielema family will find comfort in your treasured memories of many happy times shared with your Dad during his long and productive lifetime. With my heartfelt sympathy on your great loss.
Much love,
Mary McGrath

My heart goes out to your family as you grieve the loss of your husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. I do remember getting the tape that his company had made! Uncle Ralph had an impressive career, especially considering his humble immigrant roots. He was a classy guy. Love Caroline & Rob Duimering
