Dr. D. Roy Cook posted a condolence

Both Jim and Ruth were classmates, U of C 77, and I am saddened to hear of the loss of both of them. They were definitely meant to be together. Jim will always be the older hippie brother, smoking his pipe and going to his clinical clerkship courses with his old army over the shoulder satchel. So sorry I lost contact as I know he had so much love and wisdom to impart to all. That was the same with Ruth and what drew them together and they now share for eternity. Special people.

As a close neighbour of Jim, I had the pleasure to get to know him pretty well. Jim was very intelligent, curious, and caring. He loved to spend time in his garden. Jim really loved the incredible views of the Rocky Mountains. We spent many hours having coffee on our decks. I will miss our conversations, your open mind, and your big friendly smile.

Jim and his late wife Ruth Anne Dickson were generous donors to the Salvation Army for over 30 years. Ruth cared about shelters and addictions, Jim just cared about everything. Mostly he cared about Ruth. He suffered the loss of his dear wife every day. As much as I will miss Jim, I know that he is in God's warm embrace and reunited with his beloved Ruth. Jim had a quiet and powerful impact on his community and he cared deeply for his neighbours. I will miss him very much and The Salvation Army is lucky to have had him as a friend and supporter. God Bless you Jim.

I only had the opportunity to work with Dr. Watterson a couple of times in my residency. He was always reinforced the need to auscultate patients pre-op. Now, even 14 years after my residency, I still think of him every time I do this! You never know the impact you have on others.

Jim was one of my favorite anesthesia teachers. His calm, easy manner, and his ability to hang back and let me discover on my own. Great teacher. You will be missed!

Jim and I were part of the small anesthesia group that had to split our time between the old Calgary General and new Peter Lougheed in the late 1980's and early 1990's. His broad background (including his own start in psychiatry) gave a unique perspective on work and the individuals we worked with. His insights and suggestions were sometimes at odds with our group and our leaders, but they were always welcome. On a personal level, he was always engaging and supportive. When he moved away from hospital work we would only rarely cross paths. But over the last 3 years the "retired doctors coffee group" gave me a chance to reconnect and learn more about Jim. I am saddened that he has passed away as I looked forward to those get-togethers and thought that we would continue to learn more about (and from) each other for many years to come.
Our condolences to his family and friends.

Jim was a colleague, fellow dog walker, and golfer, coffee klatch host, and friend. Through the countless meetings, walks, and over coffee, Jim's character shone brightly. He was sincere and thoughtful. He considered the other side's POV and gave his honest opinion on whatever we were talking about, and if he didn't know, he said so. He was, in his own way, the conscience of the department of anesthesia during his time there. He died too soon and too fast for many of us to say goodbye. Jim, you will be missed by me and many of your friends from work. Condolences to the friends and family of Jim.
