Obituary of Sevy BASS

Please share a memory of Sevy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
BASS, Sevy Margaret July 20, 1921 - Helgum June 29, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta Sevy Bass passed away peacefully on June 29, 2014. Sevy was born on July 20, 1921 in Helgum, Sweden, to Johan and Lily Brostrom. In 1927, her father immigrated to Canada to earn enough money to bring his family here. After two years, he sent for his family to join him in Canada. At age seven, Sevy, her mother, and two sisters, Evy and Christina, sailed from Sweden to Halifax and arrived on April 5, 1929. From Halifax they traveled by train to Brownvale, Alberta where the entire family was reunited. While in Alberta, Johan and Lily had another child, Eric. In July 1931, Sevy’s father became very ill and passed away from tuberculosis. Sevy always had fond memories of her father and loved him dearly. In April 1932, the family moved to Clear Prairie. Under the circumstances, Sevy and Eric were sent to live with Mary Taylor and her family. Sevy always referred to Mrs. Taylor as Grandma Taylor and remembered being treated very well by the Taylor family. Sevy was like a mother to Eric at the Taylor home. Sevy was a beautiful woman and caught the attention of Joseph Bass one night at a town concert. She often reflected on how Joseph would ride a horse, Mabel, a great distance just to visit her. On March 31, 1944, Sevy and Joseph were married and remained together for 68 years. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Calgary, where they raised five children, Joyce, Wayne, Brian, Sharon, and Wendy. Besides the numerous responsibilities Sevy had as a mother, she also helped Joseph with the administrative work he had with his own company, Mobile Heat Exchanger. Sevy also volunteered her time to help take care of children at the Time Out program at St. David’s United Church for 23 years. To many, Sevy was a very gentle, loving woman who was devoted to her husband and children. Sevy’s welcoming and caring personality also extended beyond her own family, as she knew how to make anyone feel appreciated and valued. She would always tell people that she loved them and that they were very special friends. Sevy will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Sevy is survived by her children Wayne (Joan), Brian, Sharon (Elmer, deceased), Wendy (Lauritz) and her stepsisters Edith, Genevieve, Helen, and Louise. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends Gloria and Georgie. Sevy was predeceased by her husband Joseph, her daughter Joyce (Nick), her sisters (Evy, Christina), her brother (Eric) and her stepbrother (Leonard). A Memorial Service will be held at Calgary Crematorium Chapel, 3219 – 4th Street, NW (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, July 4, 2014 at 2 pm. If family and friends so desire, memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to The Servants Anonymous Foundation (safoundation.com, P.O. Box 46013 Inglewood RPO 1233 – 9 Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta T2G 5H7). Thank you to the caring and compassionate staff of Bow View Manor. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family through Heritage Funeral Services.
