Obituary of Emily Owad

Emily Owad of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at the age of 87 years.
Emily was born in Liptovske Revuce, Slovakia on March 23, 1935. She immigrated to Canada with her mother, in 1949 when she was 14 years old, reuniting with her father, who had come to Canada ahead of his family in search of work and a place to settle. They lived in Blairmore, AB for a number of years, where her father worked in the nearby coal mines. They eventually moved to Calgary, making it their permanent home.
Emily married her husband Klem in 1954. Together, they made a home where they raised their two children and provided a place for Emily’s parents, who lived with them until their passing.
Emily and Klem owned catering businesses and a restaurant over the years, where they worked together. She loved meeting to and speaking with people and took great pride in her work and the level of service they offered their customers.
Emily enjoyed spending time crocheting, playing cards and working on puzzles. The time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her the most joy.
Emily’s most memorable vacations were travelling back to Slovakia, to be a part of traditional family weddings and in the time spent with her brother-in-law, niece and nephews and extended family during those trips.
She will be most remembered for her generosity, tenacious spirit and all the endearing traits that were uniquely hers.
Emily is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ria Boutin (Bernie) of Airdrie, AB; one son and daughter-in-law, Ed Owad (Sylvia) of Calgary, AB; four grandchildren, Brittnay Abbey (Allan), Alexandra Boutin, Michael Owad, Ryan Owad (Samantha); and five great-grandchildren, Kayleb Abbey, Phaedra Abbey, Logan Michael Owad, Hudson Murray Owad, Leland Jack Owad.
Emily is also survived by a niece, nephews, cousins and friends.
Emily was predeceased by her husband Klem; her sister Filomena (Zrubak); and her parents John and Paulina Strbak.
Funeral Services will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, (404 Northmount Place, NW) on Wednesday, February, 8, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
