April 16, 1930 – Calgary, Alberta

February 3, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness, the family of Jack Hides announce his peaceful passing after a short battle with cancer at the South Health Campus on February 3, 2023 at the age of 92 with his loving wife of 66 years, Ruby, and family nearby.

Jack was a gifted hockey player who grew up in the minor and junior hockey leagues in Calgary, ultimately playing in the Chicago Blackhawks farm system. When his hockey career ended, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers, where he spent 3 years.  After his military service, Jack began a long and successful career in the Canadian downstream oil & gas industry, with Royalite, Pacific 66 and Petro-Canada, from where he retired in 1986. In retirement Jack and Ruby spent thirty plus years wintering in Mesa, AZ; travelling; and experiencing many great adventures together.

Jack loved sports, and would recall often how he met Ruby.  Jack was the umpire and Ruby was the catcher at a Petroleum League ball game.  Besides his great love of his family, Jack’s passions included raising Arabian horses, living on the acreage, camping, golf, curling, photography and travel.  He loved cheering on his kids and grandkids’ sports teams; as well as the Calgary Flames, Calgary Stampeders & Green Bay Packers.  In the growing season, he loved to watch Ruby plant, tend and harvest her garden.

Jack is survived by his wife Ruby, six children Larry (Marie), Barry (Liz), Garry (Teresa), Lynda (Kelly) Dagenais, Carolyn (Bryan) Marit and John David (Elisa). Also, ten grandchildren: Lisa (Joe) Santos, Kevin Hides, Dylan Dagenais, Kord Dagenais, Owen Hides, Logan Hides, Cassidy Hides, Taylor Hides, Morgan Hides and Mitchell Hides; and six great grandchildren Tyler Santos, Alesha Santos, Adrian Hides, Ruby Hides, Tiegan Dagenais and Hunter Dagenais. He is also survived by his sister Irene McBee and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Ida Hides, brothers Harold (Bud), Henry (Harry), Lorne, Edward (Ted), and sisters Jenanne (Nan) Schneider, Elizabeth (Beth) Chapman and Beverly Roberts.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Unit 68 at the South Health Campus for the wonderful and compassionate care they extended to Dad during his last days.

As per Dad’s wishes there will not be a funeral. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200-325 Manning Rd. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 Telephone: (403)205-3966, email:donorservices@cancer.ab.ca. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
