October 8, 1933 – Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India

March 4, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta, Canada

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Ajit Singh Bains on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

Born in 1933 in the village of Manak Dheri, Hoshiarpur, Punjab to Bawa Singh and Dhan Kaur, Ajit Singh led a full life guided by a strong sense of responsibility.

After his father died when he was a young boy, he filled his father’s role and supported his mother and two sisters throughout their lives. Between 1960 and 1968, he served in the Indian army, including at the time of the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965. In 1968 he left Punjab, journeying and residing in three continents - Africa (Uganda) where he lived for four years, and then on to Europe (Malta) and South America (Argentina) - before he settled in Canada in 1975.

A deeply religious man, he lived by the core principles of Sikhism: truthfulness, honest earning, and charity in God’s name. He was an avid reader of books on Sikhism and its history, practiced meditation and yoga daily; and enjoyed a humble and simple life, devoid of unnecessary materialism. Ajit Singh worked hard to provide for and raise his family of five in Calgary, among other jobs, working as a machine operator with Irving Wire Products for 25 years.

All who knew and loved him will remember him for his sincerity, kindness, intelligence, grace, and his warm and charismatic smile. We will miss his storytelling of his adventures past, his lessons on Sikhism, and his quiet yet strong and constant presence.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Harcharn; sons, Mandeep, Amardeep, and Parvinder (Jasvir); grandchildren, Jassa, Harleen, and Sukhneel who will miss their Baba dearly but were lucky to have had time to soak up his love and learn from his wisdom; and his extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 1:00 PM at the Calgary Crematorium Chapel, (3219 – 4th Street NW, within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) followed by a religious service at the Gurudwara (Dashmesh Culture Centre, 135 Martindale Road Blvd, NE). In lieu of flowers, we kindly request you donate to the Dashmesh Culture Centre. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
