Quite simply, “Best neighbour EVER!” (24 years).
Heartfelt condolences to Daniel (+), Chris & Nick – yes you were “lucky to have the mom you did”. Additionally though, we know that Vreni considered herself just as fortunate to have each of you.
We are thankful to have known Vreni and Peter, they were a large part of our life’s ups-and-downs. We too will proudly use them as a “life example”.

I am so sorry for your loss and please accept our condolences.
This weekend when all our family got together we were remembering what a wonderful neighbour Vreni was and such a joy to know.
We were particularly reflecting upon her incredible culinary talents with not only her hosting all the amazing open houses but that she also wrote a cookbook and gave cooking classes. Luckily, Mother and Donna were able to attend one so that a number of Vreni's signature dishes could be added to your family's menu including puff pastry (a novelty to most Canadians at that time), walnut torte and the most decadent of all Napoleon (which I once calculated to contain over 17,000 calories). Even my Dad got involved as he use to make a wicked punch from Verni's book with Grand Marnier soaked strawberries.
I particularly recall her generosity as she use to bake my favourite chocolate meringue cookies every year for my birthday and our family also received a number of gingerbread houses to enjoy during the Christmas holidays.
Vern's creativity extended beyond the kitchen into crafting. We still have a number of her hand knitted sweaters to keep us warm. Her handmade Xmas decorations are still hung up every year in my parents house and now that my parents are too old to put up a tree some of her handiwork has been passed down to me to grace my tree keeping her memory alive.
We also remembered her sense of humour, fun and compassion. She was particularly forgiving when she and Peter came over to watch the Grey Cup on year and our dog Kola chewed a hole in her seal skin boot.
Her legacies will no doubt continue to inspire and enrich the lives of those who knew her for years too come.
My deepest sympathy
Suzanne Fraser and the entire Fraser family

Dear Nicholas, Chris, Daniel and family,
Vreni was a friendly, energetic lady. She generously shared her delicious Swiss baking with friends One of her feats with Peter was to ascend Mt Victoria high above Lake Louise under the leadership of Austrian mountain Guide Ferdl Taxbock

I remember when we first moved in to our "new" home in Cambrian Heights, Mrs. Gretener used to have Christmas cards and gingerbread cookies for all the neighbors. What wonderful memories! That would be almost fifty years ago. It's hard to believe how quickly the time has passed. Deepest condolences to her family.

Sending my deepest condolence to the family. Mrs. Gretener was truly a kind and creative soul. My life was not the same after I discovered her chocolate marble loaf. And, oh my, she was funny. So many good memories.
