Please share a memory of Norman to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

July 19, 1947 - Calgary, Alberta

July 8, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness we announce the death of Norman Hess. He died in the Foothills Medical Centre after suffering a stroke, and ensuing complications.

Norman was a Justice in the Alberta Count of Justice in Calgary for twenty-four years and a lawyer for twenty-eight years before being appointed to the bench. Norman also served as Assistant Chief Judge, Civil Division for 5 years. Norman loved the law and was well respected for his knowledge and commitment and will be missed by his colleagues. Norman was born in Calgary attending William Aberhart high school, UAC, and U of C graduating in ’68, before attending Edmonton U of A Law School graduating in 1971. He articled at Bennett Jones and then joined the firm of Barron, McBain, Green, and Park. Norman had many accomplishments outside of the law; Senate work as well as his community contributions. He loved his music, teaching, playing and listening all the time; he cherished his time being a drummer in various bands in Calgary.

Norman will be sorrily missed by his loving family, his wife of 55 years Doreen, sons, Doran (Lisa) and Randy (Leisha); grandchildren, Ella, his partner in crime, Spencer and Aeife, who called him “Rubby head”.  Norman also leaves behind his sister Bev (Ken) and brother Gary, sisters-in-law, Margaret (Martin), and Debbie; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends, all of whom were dear to him.

I wish to thank the wonderful staff in the Neurology Department at Foothills Medical Centre for their compassion and kindness to Norman and my family. Norm now journeys to be with a few band mates….. Abiding by Norman’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral.

Raise a dram or two of scotch, put a smile on your face, and toast his life.

                                                     It was glorious!
