Lyne was an exceptional human being. Her strength, intelligence and determination far surpassed the average person’s.
I met Lyne around the time that I became a single parent 30 years ago. She arrived from Quebec to Alberta around 10 years before that, her son Julienne in tow. She hardly spoke a word of English at the time, but quickly became fluent in the language of Western Canada.
Before she was able to purchase a vehicle in Calgary, she biked everywhere around Calgary, Julienne in a carrier behind her. She was employed as a very diligent, compassionate nurse, mostly doing home care, for over 30 years. Unfortunately, she didn’t quite make it to retirement. She was still working up until Lymphoma abruptly stopped her a few months ago.
For several years, before she met her husband, Ralph, she would spend almost every weekend hiking, up in Yoho National Park, by herself, staying in the hostel up there. The mountains were always calling her.
Apart from hiking and biking, she practiced, first yoga and then meditation,
daily, and attended and organized many silent retreats. Her yoga took her to India where she practiced on ancient hard rock surfaces. Only Lyne would challenge herself to such a feat!
We completed many beautiful, inspiring and challenging hikes together, including Krypt lake in Waterton, Lake O’hara and Skoki. One of my most cherished memories of hiking with Lyne included singing Frere Jacque in the rain on our way home from Skoki with another close friend, Catherine, in three languages.
I will try and picture you, Lyne, singing in the rain in your beloved Rockies from now on!
Hugs forever,
Wanda

Remembering the times spent together on meditation retreats, sharing of a room, your willingness to take over teaching when I retired, studying James Baraz "Awakening Joy" together- I would stop in after work and you would have tea and cookies for me, the times you visited me in Canmore and we hiked, you treated me to meals, sharing PEI mussels at an Italian eatery, visiting us in our RV in Vancouver.
You were a wonderful kalyanamitta, thank you for you friendship.
