Els and Weitsa were the first people we met in Canada. Ellis and Frank were good friends because they missed Holland. We played Bridge together and shared stories about the Netherlands. We also went to restaurants together. Els was a good friend and I will miss her.

Elsje was a dear friend to myself and my family here in Victoria. We came to know each other through Kairos, an ecumenical social justice group, where she found people who shared her values and recognition that progressive action is needed in this world. We were neighbours as well, and enjoyed dinners, walks, music, and lively discussions! She never lost her love for the Netherlands, her homeland, but created a full life for herself here in Canada. Sadly the onset of her illness and Covid closed off some of the activities that gave her joy. It was wonderful that she could spend her final years back in Calgary close to family and old friends. I missed Elsje when she left Victoria, and I am missing her again today as I recall her laughter and her amazing spirit! My condolences to all who loved her.

Els was a wonderful friend and a guest several times in my home! What a delight to have around, always full of interesting info on a wide variety of current topics!!
She was always up for a good hike and loved forays into nature!
She was a great diner and particularly appreciated a good ethnic meal as in Italian accompanied by a glass or two of Dominic’s home made wine!! Many a time we shared her stories of Africa and childhood growing up in the Netherlands!
She was the best of mothers always concerned for her sons, her pride and joy!!
Rest in peace, dear Els as you are brave beyond belief!
