I met Nove very soon after I met my beloved husband Martin. The first thing I noticed about Nove was how open he was, he welcomed me into this special group of friends that I was about to meet. Martin, Nove, Mike, Patrick, George, Chelsea and of course Andrea. At that time in their lives they were inseparable, it was this charismatic group of people that you just wanted to be around. You wanted to be around them because they all loved each other, they had that special friendship that we all long to have. I remember Nove as being this larger than life character, he was so full of life and always had that deep look in his eyes like he was an old soul. What a friendship you and Martin had, it was a mutual affection and a sense of really knowing one another. Nove you are so missed, I pray the dear lord keeps you in his care until we meet again beautiful one. Martin and I would also like to reach out to the girl Nove was so in love with. We did not know him well but are saddened to have just heard of his passing. We remember him as a kind and gentle young man. My deepest deepest condolences to the Kalia family. I just learned of the loss of your son. I am sure nothing will soften the pain of his absence for you during this time, but I wish to share a small story of one conversation that to me embodied what a wonderful person he was. I met Nove when he was in medical school with my brother Patrick. He joined us on a sailing trip in the British Virgin Islands and I got to know him a little bit during that short time. I was struck by how kind, engaging, and sweet he was. I was studying to be a yoga teacher in Toronto and struggling with learning some Sanskrit words for the asanas. He sat down beside me and told me not to worry or be too hard on myself as it was a difficult to learn a whole different language. We talked about Sanskrit and how it was such a poetic language with a rich oral tradition. He shared with me how even he didn't know any Sanskrit but the one person who did was his mother, and she was the smartest person he knew. He then went on to tell me how wonderful she was and how much he admired her- and that he did not ever think he would meet a woman who could ever come anywhere close to being her equal. He then went on to tell me a bit more about his family, and he spoke of both of his parents with such high regard. To this day I remember that conversation as distinctly as if it just happened. At that time I was completely touched and moved by the obvious admiration and pride Nove had for his parents, and remember thinking that they would be proud to know that they had a son who spoke so highly of them. And I took his kind words to heart when and tried to be gentle with myself in my continuing struggles with Sanskrit. Much love during your time of loss, Kathleen

I am deeply saddened to hear of this terrible news today. I met Nove in the first week of medical school We became good friends at University of Sydney, from day 1, given our similar backgrounds. We had some great memories and good laughs throughout medical school. Over the next four years of medical school, Nove impressed me for his inner strength. I think what most people found impressive is he seem to be able to overcome a lot of challenges similar students faced with ease and his achievements really inspired me and my career. He was saying he wanted to be a cardiologist from day 1 and he did it. He was truly inspirational individual and someone who will be deeply missed in our graduating class at Univ of Sydney. I recently touch based with Nove during his fellowship training in the USA this past spring after several years and was hoping to reconnect. I was really looking forward to reconnecting with him again and truely saddened to hear this news today. Nove was a truly special and gifted individual. Last night, I found out that Nove has died. A part of me has now died. During the most adventurous years of my life, when real life was starting to take shape, but before real life actually and inevitably set in, when we were new adults but still students and wearing wild youthfulness on our sleeves, in our text messages... when we could still not afford to go out but would anyway and crash on each other couches and have each others backs and talk about girls and hit the books stress about where we'd end up and never once even consider that we would no longer be friends one day - these days are gone, and for me, those days were with Nove. Virtually every single day during this wonderful, wild, period, I was with him. studying, scheming, joking, texting... talking about our families, when we might get married... the kind of closeness that sometimes is only found with a new friend. Unlike old friend and family, which are your comfort and home, a new friend can be a blank canvas to expose your whole soul too - that has no concepts of you, and thus you convey your whole self at that time and place to them - the depth is tremendous. Nove is that for me. He is that time, and i need him to be alive because I need to relive those moments sometime and i can't by myself... I cannot have a friend like him again because there will never be room in my life. you need time and a backdrop for this - you need to study till midnight every single night together for 3 years. you need to live at the beach on a shoestring budget. you need to have only one shared worry which is "will we get into residency", and meet each others families, and go to brazil, and go on adventures, and build albums of memories that only that person would ever understand when you say out loud, many years later, "remember when we did this....?" For that time, Nove was my best friend. And it was the best time of my life. I love you nove. and i am so sad you are gone

I was Nove's co-intern, co-resident and co-chief resident during our training at Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC. It is very hard to accept that I won't be able to talk to him, to share our stories, achievements and laughs together anymore. Shocked when I heard the sad news. I knew Nove from Sydney in 2003 and Nove myself, Imran and Martin became good friends. We met up again few years later at his place in New York.
