Obituary of Harpal LAIL

Please share a memory of Harpal to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harpal Singh Lail, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to so many. Fondly known as Pala to those that were fortunate to have him in their lives, he left us suddenly on Thursday, July 18th. His loss is being felt not only by his family and friends but by many remembering fondly how he played an integral role in the establishment and success of the Punjabi community in Calgary. He was a pillar of strength not only for his family but also for the socio-political circles of Calgary and Punjab, encouraging a community where old and new generations worked together for positive change and progression. The family takes comfort in knowing that he will be with his late parents Sardar Nasib Singh and Sardarni Balwant Kaur Lail. Harpal Singh is survived by his wife of 39 years, Amarjit Kaur Lail. His life lessons, and his legacy will be carried on by his children; daughter Gurpreet (Rinku) Kaur Lail and her husband Paul Singh Dhaliwal, and son Jasprit (Jesse) Singh Lail. His grandchildren for whom he kept his brightest smile, Sahana and Raunik will forever have his love and guidance. Harpal Singh is also survived by his three brothers Mohan Singh (Sawinder), Sukhdev Singh (Harjeet) of Calgary, Dr. Harjit Singh (Gurparkash) of Abbotsford, and sister Jaswinder Kaur Johal (Jagdish Singh) of Penticton. He leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Born in Julana Mandi, Haryana on May 11, 1950, Harpal Singh arrived in Calgary in 1972 and made this city his home ever since. He came to Canada and achieved not only his own hopes and dreams but supported, and assisted hundreds of people in building new and prosperous lives for themselves and their families. He built a loving and expansive network of friends across North America and his native Punjab, India, a place he always kept a close attachment to through his many visits and charitable endeavours. His passion for providing youth with a positive and productive environment was shared with others through hundreds of soccer tournaments that he oversaw through his lifetime. His wisdom, guidance, humor, and support made him a constant source of comfort for so many. His ability to be the most loyal of friends, will be one of his greatest legacies he leaves behind. To honour his memory, Funeral Services will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 – 4th Street N.W., (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Prayer services will follow at Sikh Society Calgary, 739 81 Street SW.
